The Difference Between Veterans Day And Memorial Day

“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.” James Garfield

“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”Harry S. Truman

Happy To Have Them Home

The principal difference between the two observances is that Veterans Day extends its reach to also include those veterans who made it home, having accomplished the missions they set out to achieve on behalf of our nation. It makes no difference whether they are veterans of war or peace, it is enough that they served our nation, protecting the people and freedoms represented by the American flag. Long before Armistice Day was first celebrated, Abraham Lincoln spoke the following words, which still hold truth.

“The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

Independence Day/fourth Of July

This is probably the most well-known of all the holidays honoring American service members and/or wars the U.S. was involved in. Most people know this federal holiday celebrates the date when the Continental Congress declared that the 13 American colonies of England were no longer subject to King George III and were henceforth a free nation.

What many people dont know is that the image most commonly associated with that event an oil painting by John Trumbull purportedly depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 didnt actually happen.

According to the New England Historical Society, Trumbull painted 47 men, five of whom did not sign the document, and 14 who did sign the declaration did not appear in the painting because he didnt have an image of them to go by.

In actuality, July 4 is the date the document was sent to the printers. The date depicted in the painting is actually June 28, when a draft of the document was ready for review, but the document was never signed at a ceremonial event. In fact, the final signatory to the document, Thomas McKean of Delaware, didnt sign until 1781, four years after the first official printed copy was released.

The Us Has Two Public Holidays To Honor Those Who Have Served Their Country But What Are The Differences Between Memorial And Veterans Day

Those around the country will celebrate Memorial Day this Monday 31 May. Memorial Day was established as a holiday to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The holiday began to be celebrated after the American Civil War and was given permanent status on the public calendar in 1971. Veterans Day takes place on 11 November each year, while the date of Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May.

Veterans Day Honors All Veterans & Active Duty Personnel

Veterans Day focuses on all active-duty personnel and military veterans. Its a day of celebrating those who have served to protect us. The holiday started out celebrating the anniversary of the end of World War I. It was originally called Armistice Day, but the name was replaced by Veterans Day in 1954. Today, it honors all veterans who have served in the U.S. military

On November 11, 1918, World War I was officially ended. On November 11, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson issued the following message about Armistice Day:

In 1938, November 11 was officially dedicated as Armistice Day to celebrate World War I veterans, Military.com shared. But then in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress changed the holiday to Veterans Day to honor all veterans of wars, including World War I. Veterans Day is still celebrated on November 11, but if it falls on a weekend then it is officially observed either the Friday before or the Monday after , allowing federal employees to still have a day off.

Remember Veterans Day As 11

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, is celebrated every November 11 to mark the signing of the Peace Treaty of the War that would end all wars, World War I. The Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918, proving to be a very happy occasion. The world was once again at peace and millions of soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen from all countries were returning home to their families and loved ones.

Unfortunately, World War I was not the war to end all wars. So in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a day in which we thank all veterans for their service. If you were to think of it as a picture, the sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square at the end of WWII is a great image.

What’s The Difference Between Memorial Day And Veterans Day

Memorial Day, marked on the last Monday in May every year, falls on May 31 in 2021. The occasion is sometimes confused with Veterans Day, another federal holiday honoring members of the military.

USA.gov notes: “Some people get Memorial Day and Veterans Day confused. On Memorial Day, America honors those who died while serving in the military.”

However “on Veterans Day, the country celebrates everyone who has served in the military,” the federal government website continues.

Memorial Day honors and remembers “particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle,” the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says.

Here we take a look at the meaning and history of the two federal holidays.

How To Celebrate Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is the lesser-known day of celebration when compared to Veterans Day or Memorial Day, but its just as important and valuable and should definitely be celebrated. This is the day when you can recognize all members of the military, past and present.

Service members may love what they do, but leaving their friends and family or even taking their family all around the world with them from base to base takes a lot of sacrifices. Many military families dont get to settle down until theyre retired. For every military family, there is the strain of deployment, time away, constantly moving from one location to another, and, in time of war, the continual question whether their loved one will return.

These men and women, past and present, deserve recognition and thanks. During Armed Forces Day, youll be able to find festivities and parades on or near military bases. Look up and see what celebrations are occurring in your area and plan to attend some with your family. Explain to your children why these men and women are so important and why they deserve to be recognized.

Whether youre celebrating friends you know, parents who served, or your children who have decided to follow in a family members footsteps, recognizing the men and women of the Armed Forces is an important opportunity to show them how appreciated they truly are.

Armed Forces Day Began To Unite Military Celebration Days

Pin by Mardeezi on Billboard

Today, there are six branches of the United States Military the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and the Coast Guard. Each branch has its own days during which they recognize their role in Americas history. The Marine Corps, for example, celebrates their birthday on the day the corps was founded. However, there was no single holiday for the civilians of America to celebrate all branches of the Armed Forces together.

President Harry S. Truman decided there should be a day when all branches of the military are recognized and honored. After he got the ball rolling, Armed Forces Day was officially created on August 31, 1949. Today, this day is celebrated during the third Saturday in May.

A Brief History Of Memorial Day And Veterans Day

Memorial Day began as something called Decoration Day in the years following the end of the Civil War in 1865. On May 5, 1868, an organization for Union vets called the Grand Army of the Republic established Decoration Day on May 30.

It was intended as a way to honor soldiers lost in the Civil War, strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land according to the original proclamation by the organizations leader, General John A. Logan.

Enter Armistice Day, Later Known As Veterans Day

Veterans Day has a similar connection in its origin story thanks to World War One, but in the case of Veterans Day, the end of the war was the catalyst for the creation of the holiday rather than a modification of it ala Memorial Day.

Most people get confused and end up saying something that shows that they do not know the difference between the two. Weâll help clear the confusion in this article.

Memorial Day: This holiday is to honor those who have served in the military and have died. This holiday tends to fall on the very last Monday of May.

There are online resources such as the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs who will explain the meaning and Memorial Day came to be.

In their words, they recall the idea of how Memorial Day first came to be. On May 5th of 1868, three long years after the Civil War, the Grand Army of Republic wanted a day to honor those who have fallen by giving flowers to them in their grave. At the time, the mayor, John A. Logan, decided to declare this special day on May 30 to commemorate military members who had fallen in battle. The reasoning behind this date is because flowers would bloom no matter what part of the country you live in.

In 1971, Congress passed the National Holiday Act, which officially declared this an American holiday.

Youâd also be surprised that people also confuse Labor Day with honoring the troops as well. Labor Day is a holiday to commemorate American workers, but it doesnât have anything to do with the military.
