We will calculate your weekly benefit amount using a base period. This base period covers 12 months and is divided into four consecutive quarters of three months each.

Your weekly benefit amount is about 60 to 70 percent of wages earned 5 to 18 months before your claim start date, up to the maximum weekly benefit amount. You must have been paying SDI taxes on these wages . Your base period does not include wages paid at the time your disability begins.

Disability Benefits Payment Schedule

The Social Security Administration has published a schedule of 2022 payments, making it easy to find out when you can expect your SSD benefit checks. You can also use your birthday to help remember when you’ll receive your payments, which are scheduled to arrive on the same Wednesday each month.

If your birthday is from the 1st to the 10th, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday of each month.
If you were born between the 11th and the 20th, your benefits will arrive on the third Wednesday of the month.
If your birthday is from the 21st to the end of the month, you’ll receive your benefits payment on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
Supplemental Security Income benefits will arrive on the first of the month.
If your payment date falls on a holiday, the SSA will usually send the check early.

You should also tell NYS SSP about the following changes as soon as you know about them:

Changes in bank account information
Changes in your payee
Changes in who you wish to allow to receive information about your benefits

A retired or disabled worker, the payment day will be determined by your own date of birth.
A spouse, the payment day will be determined by your spouses date of birth.
A survivor, the payment day will be determined by your parents/spouses date of birth.
A retired or disabled worker and as a spouse, the payment day will be determined by the date of birth of the beneficiary of the benefit first received.

Beneficiaries receiving benefits prior to May 1997 will have a payment date of the third of the month

Beneficiaries receiving both Social Security benefits and SSI payments will have a payment date of the third of the month.

Beneficiaries paid on the third of the month can, under certain circumstances, volunteer to change their payment date but will not be able to choose the payment day. The birth date will determine the new payment day. The decision to volunteer for cycling is permanent but the payment cycle could change if entitlement on a new record occurs.

Iv: What Financing Issues Does Ssdi Face

SSDI costs have leveled off, but the program faces a long-run funding gap. SSDI costs have stabilized as the baby boomers move from their peak disability-prone years to their peak retirement years. But SSDIs costs will still exceed its revenues. Over the next 75 years, its shortfall is projected to be about 6 percent of the programs costs or income.

SSDI has financial challenges but doesnt face bankruptcy. The payroll taxes that workers contribute out of every paycheck fund most of SSDIs costs. In addition, SSDI has built up trust fund reserves, which Social Securitys trustees estimate will last until 2065. At that point, tax revenues will be enough to pay for 92 percent of benefits even if policymakers do nothing to strengthen Social Securitys financing .

Though the SSDI trust fund has enough funding for more than three decades, policymakers must address overall Social Security financing before then.Overall, Social Security can pay full benefits for 16 more years, the trustees annual report shows, but then faces a significant, though manageable, funding shortfall. Policymakers should address Social Securitys long-term shortfall primarily by increasing Social Securitys tax revenues. Social Security will necessarily require an increasing share of our nations resources as the population ages, and polls show a widespread willingness to pay more to strengthen the program.

The Governors Executive Order N-25-20, signed March 12, 2020, waives the one-week unpaid waiting period for COVID-related DI claims with a start date of January 24, 2020, through September 30, 2021. You can collect DI benefits for the first week you are out of work.

Note: The Governors Executive Order N-08-21, signed June 11, 2021, returns the requirement to serve the one-week unpaid waiting period for COVID-related DI claims with a start date on or after October 1, 2021. You can collect DI benefits starting on the eighth day you are out of work.

Sometimes, you can receive both SSDI and SSI payments. You may have earned enough credits for SSDI. You may also meet the financial requirements for SSI. However, you must get approved medically for SSDI but receive low monthly payments to receive concurrent benefits. Social Security sends payments for both SSDI and SSI on the third day of the month.

Exceptions To The Payment Schedule

There are several cases where the default payment schedule isn’t followed and Social Security benefits are paid at a different time. The current exceptions include:

Your full retirement age is the age at which you are eligible to receive 100% of your Social Security retirement benefit.

The full retirement age used to be 65 for those born in 1937 or earlier.

On April 3, 2020, the federal government began sending eligible Americans stimulus checks as part of a relief package to help workers and the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Senior citizens and retirees who receive Social Security benefits are eligible for coronavirus stimulus checks as long as they meet the basic eligibility requirements.

The maximum stimulus payment is $1,200 for eligible adults who file separately and $2,400 for eligible married couples who file jointly. There is also an additional $500 payment per qualifying child.

In December 2020, an additional $600 stimulus check was sent out to every eligible adult and child.

Everyone who has a Social Security number and filed a tax return in the last two years generally qualified for both stimulus checks if their income falls within the governments limits. Income is based on your 2019 federal tax return.
