Is It Possible To Get Disability Benefits For The Condition

Disability Not Invisibility: My experience With Chronic Illness. | Vicky Potter | TEDxFSU

Getting benefits based only on extreme sweating is challenging. The condition needs to keep you from being able to work full-time in any type of position for at least a year. There is no official listing for the condition with the SSA. That means that they will need to look at your case and determine if you have the ability to work any kind of job before they will authorize your claim.

Due to the difficulty of getting benefits for extreme sweating, it is advisable to consult with a disability attorney before you apply with the SSA.

Can Hyperhidrosis Be Cured Permanently

Depending on what is causing your excessive sweating, you may be able to treat the condition. For most people who suffer from secondary hyperhidrosis, once the underlying condition is treated, their sweating goes back to normal. In other cases, your dermatologist may be able to prescribe a medication to control your symptoms or perform a surgical procedure to correct the sweating problem.

Iontophoresis With Tap Water

Treatment with iontophoresis may be useful for hyperhidrosis of the palms or soles, and can be tried if antiperspirants are not helpful.

Iontophoresis involves using a special machine that passes a low-voltage current through the skin of the hands or feet via pads moistened with tap water. Therapy takes about 15-20 minutes and initially is required every day, although after a while it is required less often. Possible side effects include skin irritation.

What Symptoms Does Hyperhidrosis Cause

Hyperhidrosis: Is it a Disability?

Hyperhidrosis symptoms can range widely in their severity and impact on your life. Minor symptoms may ebb and flow over a long time. Or excessive sweating may be an everyday challenge, a constant source of frustration and insecurity.

Hyperhidrosis affects people differently. Sweat may:

  • Pool under your arms or around your back.
  • Soak your shirt to the point that you need to change clothes to feel comfortable.
  • Bead on your cheeks or forehead.
  • Dampen or drip down your hands or soak your socks.

Excessive sweating may also lead to:

  • Itching and inflammation when sweat irritates the affected area.
  • Body odor, when bacteria on the skin mix with sweat particles.
  • Residue from combinations of sweat, bacteria and chemicals , leaving noticeable marks on clothing.
  • Skin changes, such as paleness or other discoloration, cracks or wrinkles.
  • Maceration on the soles of your feet.

Your symptoms may offer clues to the type of hyperhidrosis you have. Excessive sweating due to focal hyperhidrosis usually affects both sides of the body . Focal hyperhidrosis doesnt cause night sweats and doesnt go away without treatment. People with generalized hyperhidrosis may sweat while sleeping.

Can Hyperhidrosis Be Cured

There is no cure for focal hyperhidrosis. Treatments focus on reducing your symptoms and improving your quality of life.

How your healthcare provider treats secondary hyperhidrosis will depend on the underlying problem. When you can identify and treat the cause of excessive sweating, excessive sweating typically stops.

How Can I Hide My Armpit Sweat

Use Absorbent Pads and Powders You can also purchase dress shields or garment pads to use in your clothing. These can be sewn into the seam to prevent stains or come with a strap that keeps them in place under your armpit. To absorb extra sweat, use talcum powder on your armpits after applying deodorant.

What Is The Root Cause Of Hyperhidrosis

Primary Hyperhidrosis CausesEccrine sweat glands are numerous on the feet, palms, face, and armpits. When your body is overheated, when you’re moving around, when you’re feeling emotional, or as a result of hormones, nerves activate the sweat glands. When those nerves overreact, it causes hyperhidrosis.

Do I Need Testing To Confirm Hyperhidrosis

Surviving College with Hyperhidrosis

You may need one or more tests to help pinpoint whats causing your body to sweat too much. Blood or urine tests may confirm or rule out an underlying medical condition.

Your provider also may recommend a test to measure how much sweat your body produces. These tests include:

  • Starch-iodine test: Your provider applies an iodine solution to the sweaty area and sprinkles starch over the iodine solution. Where you have excess sweating, the solution turns dark blue.
  • Paper test: Your provider places special paper on the affected area to absorb sweat. Later, your provider weighs the paper to determine how much you sweated.

What Are The Best Treatments And How Effective Are They

Treatment of hyperhidrosis is tailored to the areas of the body that are sweatiest, and they are individualized to each person. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment, but fortunately many options exist. Typically, a stepwise approach makes the most sense, starting with topical therapies and then working your way up to more invasive procedures, if needed.

Who Has Hyperhidrosis Surgery

When other treatments dont work and your symptoms persist, your provider may consider surgery.

Surgeons treat some cases of excessive armpit sweating by removing sweat glands in the underarm. Carefully disconnecting the nerves responsible for symptoms may also provide relief for some people with hyperhidrosis.

Surgery has the potential to offer lasting benefits for persistent sweating that doesnt respond to other therapies. But every procedure has risks. Many people have postsurgical side effects like sweating in other areas that surgery didnt treat . Discuss a procedures advantages and potential drawbacks with a provider you trust.

Why Am I Sweating But Feel Cold

The body also sweats as a reaction to stress or anxiety. This type of sweat often feels cool instead of warm. Cold sweat can also be a symptom of a variety of mild to serious conditions or even a life-threatening condition that requires emergency medical care, such as a heart attack, severe injury, or shock.

You May Be Able To Establish Secondary Service Connection

Hyperhidrosis is a secondary condition of many different types of service-connected disabilities. For example, hyperhidrosis can stem from anxiety, diabetes, or nervous system disorders, and more. Depending on your situation, you may have developed one of these disorders or diseases due to your military service.

If you cannot establish a direct service connection for your hyperhidrosis, a secondary service connection may be an option. For example, if you developed diabetes after suffering exposure to Agent Orange and your diabetes causes excessive sweating. A lawyer can help you establish a service connection for your hyperhidrosis if it is at least as likely as not due to your service-connected diabetes.

A lawyer can help you establish a secondary service connection. If you believe your primary condition is service-connected but have not established service connection for your secondary conditions, a lawyer can help.

How Do Doctors Treat Hyperhidrosis

There are many treatments for hyperhidrosis, including medications, iontophoresis and a new promising treatment known as microwave thermolysis. Surgery is also a treatment for hyperhidrosis, and is known as a thoracic sympathotomy. Our doctors at Johns Hopkins have performed hundreds of these surgeries.

What Is The Difference Between Focal Hyperhidrosis And Generalized Hyperhidrosis

Focal hyperhidrosis causes too much sweating in parts of the body that youd typically think of as sweaty spots. These include:

  • Underarms

  • Groin

  • Beneath the breasts

Focal hyperhidrosis is also referred to as primary hyperhidrosis, because it isnt related to another medical condition. This type is more common.

Generalized hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, causes sweating everywhere. This type is rare. It is usually caused by another medical problem, so it can also be called secondary hyperhidrosis. It could be a symptom of a more serious underlying medical condition, like infection or cancer.

Its a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider if you have any of the following symptoms in addition to generalized excessive sweating:

  • Night sweats so severe that you must change your sheets or pajamas in the middle of the night

  • Fevers

  • Unintentional weight loss

  • Risk factors for, or known exposure to persons with tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS

  • Recent close contact to someone with a known COVID-19 infection

Your healthcare provider can help determine if your sweating is due to something other than hyperhidrosis.

What Is Hyperhidrosis And What Causes It

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating in either the whole body or a specific area. This condition is not detrimental to ones health, but it can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and cause psychological trauma. Hyperhidrosis can be present from birth or onset later in life. Focal hyperhidrosis refers to localized excessive sweating, typically sweating of the palms and soles of the feet, whereas Generalized hyperhidrosis occurs across the entire body.

This condition can be due to an underlying health issue or can have no evident cause, affecting approximately 2.8% of Americans. Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating with an unknown cause. This kind of hyperhidrosis is typically localized. Treatment of primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis tends to be more difficult as there is no pre-existing issue to narrow down options. Secondary hyperhidrosis is when a person sweats too much as a result of another health condition like gout, obesity, menopause, diabetes, or cancer.

Hyperhidrosis: Is It A Disability

by My Life as a PuddleSep 23, 2011Hyperhidrosis

My article below appeared in the International Hyperhidrosis Societys September/October 2011 Sweat Solutions newsletter.

I cant ever remember not sweating. As early as 3rd grade, my excessive sweating permeated my entire life. I avoid or am unable to perform certain tasks in daily life, thereby inhibiting my ability to function at my highest level. It has been pondered for some time whether Hh should be classified as a disability.

The statutory definition from Section 902 of the Americans With Disabilities Act states, with respect to an individual, the term disability means a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual a record of such an impairment or being regarded as having such an impairment.

Ive heard others ask whether hyperhidrosis should disqualify them from an employment opportunity, and Ive often thought in what instances it would disqualify me. For example, if I were to become a police officer or enter the military in a combat position, that probably wouldnt work out. Having hand-to-hand contact with weapons would not lend itself to my safety, or the safety of my fellow service members.

The first time I ever traveled to one of my companys live education meetings, I was the one who was assigned to walk the microphone up and down the aisles during the Q& A session.

What Are The Complications Of Hyperhidrosis

Over time, excessive sweating could put you at an increased risk of developing a skin infection. Hyperhidrosis can also impact your mental health.

You may find yourself changing how you act to hide your symptoms from others. Constant sweating may be so severe that you avoid routine actions . You may even give up activities you enjoy to avoid problems or embarrassment from excessive sweating.

In some cases, extreme sweating may be due to a severe and life-threatening problem. See a healthcare provider right away if you ever have chest pain or feel queasy or dizzy along with sweating symptoms.

What Questions Should I Ask My Doctor

If you have hyperhidrosis, you may want to ask your healthcare provider:

  • What caused my sweating symptoms?
  • What are my treatment options?
  • Which treatments do you recommend I try first?
  • Can I do anything else to improve symptoms or my overall health?
  • How can I support my mental health?

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Excessive sweating due to hyperhidrosis can be a short- or long-term problem. It affects some people for most of their lives. Concern over how someone may react to your symptoms may make you want to withdraw. There is no cure for hyperhidrosis, but help is available. Your provider may recommend a prescription-strength antiperspirant. Newer therapies offer you even more ways to lessen symptoms.

How Is Hyperhidrosis Treated

Your primary care provider may refer you to a dermatologist for hyperhidrosis treatment. Your provider will ask about your symptoms and overall health. The provider may start by recommending lifestyle changes or medications.

Treatments include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Changing your routine may improve minor hyperhidrosis symptoms. Your provider will discuss all your treatment options and help you decide whats right for you.
  • Aluminum-based antiperspirants: Antiperspirants work by sealing up sweat glands so your body stops producing sweat. Your provider may recommend over-the-counter or prescription-strength varieties. Stronger antiperspirants may help more. But they are also more likely to cause side effects, such as skin irritation.
  • Oral medications: Anticholinergic drugs can make aluminum-based antiperspirants work better. Potential side effects include blurred vision and problems peeing. Your provider may recommend an antidepressant, which may lessen sweating while also calming anxieties. Beta blockers may also be recommended by your provider.
  • Clinical-grade cloth wipes: Prescription-strength cloth wipes containing glycopyrronium tosylate may reduce armpit sweating. Each single-use cloth comes in its own package. You should use the wipes daily for continued benefits.
