Getting Airport Lounge Access With A Credit Card

USO Pathfinder® Transition Program: Resources for Service Members and Military Spouses

There are plenty of airport lounges that are members-only and do not necessarily have open to military policies. So, whats the next best option for TDY travel, taking a family vacation to or from an overseas location, or for a permanent change of station move?

Military members enjoy the benefit of having a government travel charge card, but this card is only to be used for official business and mission-related travel expenses.

With that in mind, having that card may not be a way in to airport lounges, but using the card builds up your credit history and responsible use of credit with a government card may make a service member more attractive to credit card companies that offer high-dollar perks such as membership rewards and access to airport lounges.

  • Who Can Use The Uso

The USO was founded in 1941 to support U.S. Armed Forces service members, as well as their families, and its what the organization continues to do today. In fact, we are one of the largest organizations dedicated to supporting the U.S. Armed Forces active duty military community, rather than veterans.

As much as the USO would like to open its doors to retirees, disabled veterans and all those who have honorably served, as a nonprofit organization, the USO has limited space and resources. The USO must focus its efforts on serving the needs of those who need us most: U.S. Armed Forces active duty, Reserve and Guard service members, as well as their families. For over 80 years, thats been our mission.

Airport Lounges That Have Allowed Military Access Without A Membership

American Airlines operates the Admirals Club in select airports around the world, in both domestic and international lounges.

The American Airlines official site says military members and family traveling same-day on United are eligible to use these airport lounges with a boarding pass and a military ID. Military members must be in uniform to travel.

Delta Airlines operates Delta Sky Club lounges and have no specific policy listed on the Sky Club official site for military, but some travel blogs claim Delta may allow those traveling in uniform to and from deployments permission to use the lounge with a copy of orders and military ID.

Delta Sky Club membership options are open to those who apply for credit cards , and military members traveling over the holidays may find Delta operating military lounge type operations during peak holiday travel season as a way of showing support for troops and military families.

United Airlines has had a policy in the past that any active duty military member flying United same day may use United Clubs as long as youre flying on orders AND are traveling in uniform. Some travel blogs report United Clubs staff being uninformed about this feature, needing to be shown the rules pertaining to military access as detailed on United.com.

But has this policy changed in recent days? Likely not, but its always better to check.

Why Are Uso Airport Lounges So Important

The strain of traveling can take its toll on anyone, but especially on our service members and their families. In addition to the daily stresses and duties of life in the military, many service members may be traveling far from home, or on their way to their next duty station or deployment. Military spouses may be traveling alone with their children while their spouse is out to sea. Some service members might just have had a flight delay and are now stranded with nowhere to go.

Thats where the USO comes in. No matter where they are coming from or where they are going, the USO is there to provide support to our nations service members and military community.

USO facilities found at overseas military bases offer many services, depending on mission and location. Some locations are fully staffed with volunteers, managers and organizers. According to the USO, others, located in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy, are unstaffed.

Another innovative approach at certain locations is the use of mobile canteens, built out of four-wheel-drive vehicles, that can provide access to email, phone calls and rest services.

In 2019 alone, an estimated 8.1 million people visited USO facilities worldwide.

    Find A Uso Airport Lounge

USO lounges are normally listed in airport directory maps and official sites. The signage and visibility for these lounges is often minimal so it is always best to ask at an airport information desk if you are not sure if the USO is active at that airport and where the lounge might be. An unexpired military ID is always required for entry into the lounge just like entering a military installation.

Who Can Use Uso Airport Lounges

Since 1941, the USO – a charity organization – has served the active duty service members of our countrys Armed Forces, as well as their spouses and families, who are stationed around the world. We are one of the largest organizations dedicated to supporting the active duty Armed Forces community, rather than veterans.

Many brave Americans have served in our Armed Forces. In fact, the latest U.S. Census data shows that there are currently 18.2 million veterans in the United States, and the USO is incredibly grateful for their service to our nation.

However, as a nonprofit, the USO has limited space and resources. Our USO airport lounges and the volunteers that work in those locations cannot properly support todays U.S. Armed Forces, as well as their families, and millions of veterans and their families, too.

As much as the USO would like to open its doors to retirees, disabled veterans and all those who have honorably served, as a nonprofit organization, the USO must focus its efforts on serving the needs of those who need us most: U.S. Armed Forces active duty, Reserve and Guard service members, as well as their families.

What Does Uso Mean And Who Started The Uso

    Pin on Vietnam

USO stands for United Service Organizations, and theres a rich history behind that name.

On Feb. 4, 1941, just before the U.S. entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt united six civilian service groups into one organization to lift the morale of our growing Armed Forces. Those entities the Salvation Army, Young Mens Christian Association , Young Womens Christian Association , National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association and the National Jewish Welfare Board became the United Service Organizations, or the USO.

Shown here are the leaders of the six USO founding agencies at a meeting April 21,1941. Mary Shotwell Ingraham of the Young Womens Christian Associations is second from the left.

Today, the USO no longer has formal ties to these six founding organizations and is an autonomous nonprofit supported by charitable donations. Interestingly, several of the founding groups that came together to form the USO still operate to this day as separate charitable organizations.

    What Is The Uso

The USO is a private, not-for-profit organization that works in cooperation with the Department of Defense. The USO is a congressionally chartered organization but is not considered part of the government. It is funded through private philanthropy, donations, volunteer work and corporations.

In 2003, a bipartisan USO congressional caucus was formed to enhance the outreach efforts of the American people to U.S. service members and their families, providing another critical link between service members and their representatives, according to the official site. The caucus has more than 200 members.

In 2022, the United Service Organization has a volunteer force of more than 30,000 people, with 250 centers all over the world.

    The Uso Evolves Again

The cycle of financial difficulty following the end of a major conflict repeated with the Vietnam conflict. While the USO was very busy during the Vietnam conflict, it kept a low profile in the peacetime years. In 1977, it relocated key operations from New York City to Washington D.C., and grew closer to the government.

In 1979, the original founding agencies severed ties with the organization, and the federal government gave the USO its charter.

Toward the end of the 20th century, the agency put greater emphasis on making life easier for military families. The USO played an important role for troops and families in both Gulf Wars, operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Today, the USO has served an estimated 35 million Americans at home and overseas.
