Compassionate Allowances And Pediatric Cancer
Thousands of people apply for disability benefits every year, so it can take months for your child to be approved for benefits. Some cases are clearly disabling, so the SSA will flag these applications for expedited review. These conditions are known as Compassionate Allowances. If your childs cancer qualifies as a Compassionate Allowance, he or she could be approved in as little as 10 days. Diagnoses that qualify as Compassionate Allowances include, but are not limited to:

Converting A Disabled Contributors Childs Benefit Into A Surviving Childs Benefit
Your eligibility for the disabled contributor’s children’s benefit would end the month of your parent’s death. However, you could then be eligible for the children’s benefit as the child of a deceased CPP contributor.
If you are aged 18 to 25 and receiving the benefit, we convert it to a surviving childs benefit automatically when we are notified of the contributors death. However, an application for the surviving childs benefit must be made for children under the age of 18.
Who Is Eligible For The Dtc
You are eligible for the DTC only if we approve Form T2201, Disability Tax Credit Certificate. A medical practitioner has to fill out and certify that you have a severe and prolonged impairment and must describe its effects. Answer a few questions to find out if the person with the disability may be eligible.
If we have already told you that you are eligible, do not send another form unless the previous period of approval has ended or if we tell you that we need one. You should tell us if your medical condition improves and you no longer meet the criteria for the DTC.

Amount Of Child’s Benefit
A minor child receiving a child’s benefit based on the Social Security earnings record of a parent is eligible for up to 50% of the parent’s monthly benefit, which depends on the parent’s lifetime earnings record. The higher the disabled parent’s lifetime average earnings, then the higher the child’s monthly SSDI benefit check will be.
For example, a disabled parent whose average indexed monthly earnings are $3,000 per month might receive an SSDI check for approximately $1,400 per month, and the child might receive approximately $700 per month. A disabled parent who earned twice as much money while working might have an AIME of $6,000 per month and receive a disability check for $2,100 per month, while the child receives a child’s benefit of approximately $1,050 per month. However, if more than one relative is receiving Social Security benefits based on the disabled parent’s record, the children’s benefits will be subject to a family maximum , and reduced according to a formula.
Adult Children With Benefits
This is a specific category for children who were disabled by the time they turned 18. If the child was previously receiving benefits in lieu of a disability or a parents benefits, he or she may continue to receive these benefits as long as the disability exists. These benefits are also available to young adults who are disabled before they reach the age of 22.

What Are The Child Disability Tax Credit Eligibility Requirements
The Canada Revenue Agency decides on your childs eligibility for the Disability Tax Credit based on the information your childs medical practitioner provides in Form T2201, also known as Disability Tax Credit Certificate. In this form, you and your doctor must prove that the child has a severe and prolonged impairment in physical or mental functions. Once the form is filled and signed, you can send the form to the CRA at any time during the year.

Dependent Children Who Have Completed High School
Dependent children who have completed high school should continue to be included in the benefit unit.
After completing high school, a dependent child who does not plan to attend post-secondary school should be encouraged to access employment assistance through their local Ontario Works office. Dependent children who access employment assistance through Ontario Works, do so on a voluntary basis. There is no authority under the ODSP Regulation to compel dependent children to comply with participation requirements.
When a dependent child turns 18, he/she becomes a dependent adult with Ontario Works participation requirements.
Dependent children with a disability, who are no longer attending secondary school, are eligible to apply for ODSP Employment Supports if they require employment assistance in order to obtain or maintain employment. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age.
