Completing The Application Process
It will take the SSA approximately three to four months to process your claim for disability benefits. If your claim is approved, you will receive a letter stating how much your monthly benefits will be and how much back pay, if any, you are entitled to.
If your Social Security Disability application is not approved, you have 60 days from the date you receive the notice to appeal the SSA’s decision to deny your benefits. Approximately 70 percent of the applications received by the SSA are denied each year so it is not uncommon for applicants to have to file an appeal in order to receive Social Security Disability benefits.
What Evidence Will I Need To Provide To Support My Claim
You can help to support your VA disability claim by providing documents such as:
- VA medical records and hospital records that relate to your claimed illnesses or injuries or that show your rated disability has gotten worse
- Private medical records and hospital reports that relate to your claimed illnesses or injuries or that show your disability has gotten worse
- Supporting statements youd like to provide from family members, friends, clergy members, law enforcement personnel, or those you served with that can tell us more about your claimed condition and how and when it happened or how it got worse
Depending on the type of claim you file, you may gather supporting documents yourself, or you can ask for our help to gather evidence.

Please note: You dont have to submit any evidence to support your claim, but we may need to schedule a claim exam so we can learn more about your condition.
You should also know that you have up to a year from the date we receive your claim to turn in any evidence. If you start your application and need time to gather more supporting documents, you can save your application and come back later to finish it. Well recognize the date you started your application as your date of claim as long as you complete it within 365 days.
Create A Benefit Programs Online Account
Before you can use SDI Online, you must first create a Benefit Programs Online account.
Important: BPO is available 24 hours per day. Once you register on BPO, you are not done. You will receive an email to confirm your account, which includes a link. Select the link to complete your registration. For security purposes, the link will expire within 48 hours. Level : Disability Confident Committed
To be recognised as Disability Confident Committed, you must agree to the Disability Confident commitments and identify at least one action that youll carry out to make a difference for disabled people.
The commitments are:
- student placements
- sector-based work academy placements
Your business may be doing these things already. If so, the scheme is a great way of letting everyone know that youre serious about equal opportunities for disabled people.
Once youve signed up as Disability Confident Committed youll receive:
- confirmation of your membership and a Disability Confident certificate in recognition of your achievement
- a Disability Confident Committed badge that you can use on your business stationery, social media and communications for 3 years
- information to help you continue your journey to becoming a Disability Confident Employer
Social Security Disability Benefits: An Overview
The Social Security Administration pays disability benefits under two programs:
Social Security Disability Insurance SSDI provides disability benefits to blind or disabled individuals who are insured based on federal insurance contributions paid into the Social Security Trust Fund. Certain family members can also receive benefits based on a worker’s contributions.Supplemental Security Income SSI provides benefits to individuals who are disabled, blind or elderly, with limited income and resources, including children under age 18, who are disabled, blind or elderly.
The medical requirements that determine who is eligible for disability payments are the same under both programs. Under the Social Security system, disability payments are based on inability to work. Individuals are considered “disabled” if they are unable to do any kind of work and their disabilities are expected to last for at least twelve months or result in death.

What Is Disability Allowance
Disability Allowance is a weekly allowance paid to people with adisability. You can get DA from 16 years of age. You can get DisabilityAllowance even if you are in school.
If you qualify for DA, you may also get extra social welfare benefits withyour payment and other supplementary welfare payments.
Register For Sdi Online
Log in to BPO, then select SDI Online. You will be directed to your SDI Online Registration Options.
Important: You will need to complete the identity verification process through ID.me before you can create and use a new SDI Online account to file your claim.
You will be assigned an EDD Customer Account Number once you complete the registration process. You will also receive a registration confirmation by email and mail.
To file your claim online, follow these steps:
You must submit your DI claim within this timeframe:
- Wait nine days after you become disabled to file your claim.
- File your claim within 49 days of becoming disabled to avoid disqualification.

Is Your Condition Found In The List Of Disabling Conditions
For each of the major body systems, we maintain a list of medical conditions we consider severe enough to prevent a person from doing SGA. If your condition is not on the list, we must decide if it is as severe as a medical condition that is on the list. If it is, we will find that you have a qualifying disability. If it is not, we then go to Step 4.
We have two initiatives designed to expedite our processing of new disability claims:
- Compassionate Allowances: Certain cases that usually qualify for disability can be allowed as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed. Examples include acute leukemia, Lou Gehrigs disease , and pancreatic cancer.
- Quick Disability Determinations: We use sophisticated computer screening to identify cases with a high probability of allowance.

How You Can Apply for Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income benefits:
In Person: Applications for Social Security Disability Insurance are filed with your nearest local Social Security office. Find the Social Security office that serves your area. You can make an appointment at any local office by calling Social Security’s toll-free number, 772-1213, 24 hours a day. If you are hearing impaired, please call the toll-free TTY number, 325-0778, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Applying For Social Security Disability Benefits
Once you have gathered the necessary information, you should contact the SSA to complete a disability application. The actual application can be filled out either at the Social Security office, over the phone or online.
When submitting your application for Social Security Disability benefits, you will need to complete the Social Security Adult Disability Report.
This report contains eleven separate sections and asks for information about your medical conditions, any work activity you may be performing, your education and training, medical treatments you have undergone, medications you are taking and other disability-related information.
Once the SSA receives your application for Social Security Disability benefits and all of the documentation required, they will begin to review your claim. You may, at this point, be asked to go for a consultative exam. This exam is paid for by the SSA.
The purpose of the exam is to evaluate the extent of your disability and whether or not your condition meets the Social Security Disability guidelines. It is very important that you show up for your exam.
Not undergoing the required consultative exam may result in a denial of your Social Security Disability benefits. While the findings of the consultative exam do play a part in the decision the SSA makes in regards to your disability application, statements from your treating physicians and objective medical evidence are given more weight in the determination process.

What Happens If The Dac Gets Married
If the child receives benefits as a DAC, the benefits generally end if they get married. However, some marriages are considered protected.

We accept photocopies of W-2 forms, self-employment tax returns, and medical documents, but we must see the originals of most other documents, such as your birth certificate.

What To Expect After You Have Filed For Disability
Once we receive your completed claim application, we will determine your eligibility. You can expect this process to take up to 14 days.
Note: Processing time may vary depending upon the claim. If your claim is incomplete or requires additional information, confirming eligibility can be delayed.
During this time, we will send you a Notice of Computation to inform you of your potential weekly benefit amount based on the wages you earned in your base period.

How Much Work Do You Need
In addition to meeting our definition of disability, you must have worked long enough and recently enough under Social Security to qualify for disability benefits.
Social Security work credits are based on your total yearly wages or self-employment income. You can earn up to four credits each year.
The amount needed for a work credit changes from year to year. In 2022, for example, you earn one credit for each $1,510 in wages or self-employment income. When you’ve earned $6,040 you’ve earned your four credits for the year.
The number of work credits you need to qualify for disability benefits depends on your age when your disability begins. Generally, you need 40 credits, 20 of which were earned in the last 10 years ending with the year your disability begins. However, younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.
