Study Design And Sampled Participants
This study was a retrospective study with a matched-cohort design. Patients with PTSD were selected from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2013, according to ICD-9-CM code 309.81. In addition, each enrolled adult male PTSD patient was required to have made at least three outpatient visits within the one-year study period according to the ICD-9-CM codes. Patients diagnosed with ED before 2000 or before the first visit for PTSD were excluded. In addition, all patients aged < 20 years were excluded. A total of 4310 enrolled patients with 1079 subjects with PTSD and 3237 in the age- and index-year-matched control group without PTSD were included in this study, during a 13-year follow-up to December 31, 2013 . The required sample size for data analysis is 388 in PTSD group , and 1164 in non-PTSD group . Besides, the expected Cohens d effect size in this study equals to 0.9015. As a sensitivity analysis, by excluding the ED diagnoses within the first and first 5 years after the enrollment of PTSD and non-PTSD groups, we could reduce the protopathic bias or carry-over effects. Therefore, the outcome measures could be more valid.

Tdiu For Ptsd And Secondary Conditions

TDIU allows veterans to receive compensation at the 100 percent rate if their service-connected condition prevent them from securing and maintaining substantially gainful employment.
VA outlines TDIU regulations under 38 CFR § 4.16, which encompasses subsections and . Each subsection describes the ways in which veterans can meet the eligibility requirements for TDIU. In order to qualify for TDIU under 38 CFR § 4.16, or schedular TDIU, a veteran must have:
- One service-connected condition rated at 60 percent or higher or
- Two or more service-connected conditions, one of which is rated at 40 percent or higher, with a combined rating of 70 percent or higher.
If a veteran has a rating for PTSD, and a rating for a secondary condition to PTSD, the secondary rating can contribute to their overall combined disability rating and help to make the veteran eligible for schedular TDIU.
Veterans who do not meet the schedular requirements under 38 CFR § 4.16 may still be considered for extraschedular TDIU under § 4.16. Extraschedular TDIU does not have any rating requirement. If veterans do not meet the criteria for schedular TDIU, VA will determine if their case should be referred to the Director of Compensation Service for extraschedular consideration.

Broaching The Topic With Health Care Providers
Though the situation is far from ideal, the researchers write that there are avenues to addressing sexual dysfunction among Veterans with PTSD. A prerequisite, though, is that clinicians feel confident and qualified to address the problem.
“Some providers view sexual dysfunction as a medical issue, others as a psychological issue, leading providers to believe it is not within their purview to asses or treat such disorders,” write the authors. “Moreover, there is controversy about the qualifications providers should have to treat sexual dysfunction. It has been argued that sexual problems should be addressed solely by those who specialize in sexual issues.”
The researchers suggest clinicians and providers first educate themselves so that they feel more confident to treat patients’ sexual concerns and, perhaps most importantly, to bring them up at all. While many providers may feel more comfortable waiting for patients to express their concern about sexual dysfunction, according to the research, Veterans consistently report the topic would be easier to broach if their providers initiated the discussion.
