What Benefits Are Available
The Social Security Administration has two types of programs. They are:
- Social Security Disability Income for people who once worked but are no longer able to do so. Children typically don’t qualify for this program since they have no work history, but adults with autism might.
- Supplemental Security Income for low-income households in which a person can’t work due to a disability. Both adults and children with autism might qualify for this program.
These programs are very different, but eligibility requirements and application processes are much the same.
The Autism Society Statistically Reports That 15 Million Americans Are Living With Some Degree Of Autism
This disability is now the fastest-growing developmental diagnosis experiencing an annual growth rate of up to 17 percent.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention documents that one in 88 American children will now find their way onto the Autism Spectrum.
These children will experience varying degrees of serious developmental disorders with the most prevalent being their ability to communicate and interact with others. Only 56 percent will complete high school or enter into any type of post secondary education. Studies confirm that only 14 per- cent will become productive members of the U.S. workforce.

Dla Rates For A Child With Autism
Disability Living Allowance funding has two main parts Mobility and Care. How much you get depends on how much help is required, currently rates are between £23.20 £87.65 per week.
Mobility is split into two rates. The lower rate is for children over 5 years old who can walk but need guidance and or supervision outdoors. The higher rate is for children over 3 years old that have a physical disability affecting their ability to walk, this also includes being deaf, blind and having a severe mental impairment.
Care is split into three. The lower rate is for children with additional care needs some of the time. The medium rate is for children with additional care needs most of the time. The higher rate is for children with additional care needs all the time.

Paying Your Disability Advocate
If you decide to work with a disability advocate, then they need to be paid. However, you dont have to pay them out of pocket if youre applying to get disability.
Advocates understand that you dont have much money because you cant work, so many charge on a contingency fee basis. How Much You Can Expect To Receive
Your CDB payments are calculated using the following information:
- number of eligible children
Every July, your CDB payments are recalculated based on your AFNI from the previous year.
For example, July 2021 to June 2022 payments are based on your income from your 2020 tax return and July 2020 to June 2021 payments are based on your income from your 2019 tax return.
For the period of July 2021 to June 2022, you could get up to $2,915 for each child who is eligible for the DTC.
The benefit starts being reduced when the adjusted family net income is greater than $69,395. The reduction is calculated as follows:
- For families with one child eligible for the benefit, the reduction is 3.2% of the amount of adjusted family net income greater than $69,395.
- For families with two or more children eligible for the benefit, the reduction is 5.7% of the amount of adjusted family net income greater than $69,395.

Children with certain disabilities can be eligible for Social Security disability benefits beginning from birth. Because autism is a Spectrum Disorder, whether children qualify for assistance will depend on the severity of their symptoms. To qualify for a disability rating, the SSA uses different criteria for children than for adults.
Children with severe autism limitations will generally qualify. The SSA considers a child under 18 to be disabled if they have a permanent physical or mental condition that very seriously limits their activities.
The Social Security Administration clarifies that conditions must be established with medical evidence. This means doctors documentation of symptoms, along with lab results. A parents own listing of symptoms is not enough alone to show the disability, but a parent can help provide full details of the level of daily care and assistance that the child needs. Medical Qualifications And Autism
The SSA uses its own medical guide, known colloquially as the Blue Book, when determining if an applicant is eligible for Social Security benefits. The Blue Book lists all test results or symptoms needed to be approved for disability benefits. Autism is listed as a qualifying condition in the Childhood Blue Book. To be eligible for SSI, your child must have medical documentation of both of the following:
- Measurable deficits in verbal and non verbal communication, as well as deficits in social interactions, AND
- Restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities
Additionally, a child with autism must have extreme limitation in one, or noticeable limitations in any two of the following criteria:
- Understanding, remembering, or applying information

Changes To The Benefits System Universal Credit
The following benefits are currently being abolished: income-based Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Tax Credits, Housing Benefit, and Income Support. These are now referred to as legacy benefits. They are being replaced by a new benefit called Universal Credit .

Autism is a developmental disorder that results in impaired social behavior, difficulty communicating to others, and repetitive behavior patterns. The severity of the disorder can vary from one individual to the next. Children who have autism may exhibit the following signs: withdrawing from other people, limited eye contact, a delay in speaking and forming words, repetitive actions such as rocking, and an excessive focus on certain objects. Medical experts diagnose autism by performing neurological, cognitive, and language testing.
Childhood Autism & Disability Benefits
As previously mentioned, children with autism can only be eligible for receiving SSI benefits. To be eligible for benefits, children one through three must meet at least one of these requirements. Children between the ages of three and eighteen must meet at least two:
- Communication difficulties demonstrated through psychological and language tests
- Severe impairment in age-appropriate functioning and with children of the same age
- Limited ability feed, bathe, dress, or otherwise care for him or herself
- Difficulties with concentrating on tasks and the pace of which tasks are completed

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication and social interaction skills. Autism is thought to be present from birth and is usually recognized by three years of age. Not everyone with autism displays the same behaviors. There are many signs of autism and they may be experienced by varying degrees severe autism is considered a disability.
Diagnosis of autism depends upon the patient showing symptoms of social interaction impairment, communication impairment, and a restricted, repetitive pattern of behavior.
Communication symptoms can include a lack of responsiveness or unusual gestures. It has been reported that at least one-third of autistic individuals do not develop speech and communication enough to meet the needs of daily life.
Restrictive behavior can include purposeless movement such as rocking, head rolling, hand flapping, and other movements. It can also include compulsive behavior such as rearranging objects and needing to control the physical environment. Ritual behavior is also a common symptom of autism, such as needing to do things the same way and at the same time every day and resisting change in the environment. Limited activity, focus, and interest is also a symptom of autism, as well as self-injury, such as biting oneself, pulling hair, and other self-injury activities. None of these symptoms are specific to autism, but these behaviors are often present, severe, and reoccurring.

The calculation of how much parental income is deemed available for the support of disabled children is the same whether you have one or more disabled children. The only difference is that with multiple disabled children, the deemed amount is split among the children.
In the case of your family, I calculate the same figure as you, $333 for each of your two children . The calculation follows the formula given you by the Social Security Administration. The formula makes provisions for parents supporting themselves and their non-disabled children and gives a work incentive by not counting part of the earned income.
With regard to resource rules, two parents living in the same household with one or more disabled children can have $3,000 in countable assets and each disabled child can have $2,000. If you and your wife have more than $3,000, the excess will be divided between your two disabled children and counted toward their individual $2,000 limits. Note that several assets are not countable including but not limited to a home you live in, one vehicle, resources necessary for self-support and certain kinds of burial policies.
