Va Long Beach Healthcare System
VA Long Beach Healthcare System, former Naval Hospital Long Beach is a large medical treatment facility in Long Beach, California. The Veterans AdministrationHospital operates the hospital on 100 acres of land at 5901 E 7th St, Long Beach. The hospital has primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, spinal cord injury, geriatrics, blind rehabilitation and extended care. The VA Hospital opened on June 1, 1950.
The hospital opened in 1942 as a Naval Hospital in 1942 with 300 beds to serve wounded World War 2 servicemen. By the end of the war in 1945, the Naval Hospital had 1800 beds. Naval Hospital Long Beach also served as a major teaching hospital for the US Navy. In 1950 the Naval transferred the hospital to the Veterans Administration at the request of the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense. The Navy purchased the land on September 25, 1941 from the Bixby family of Rancho Los Alamitos.
Congress did not appropriate money for a new Navy hospital until 1960 and provided $9 million to build a 500-bed facility on land sold to the Navy by the city which was located at Carson and the San Gabriel River.
The original site of the Navy hospital constructed at Carson Street and the San Gabriel River is now the Long Beach Towne Center.
Va Long Beach Outpatient Clinic Consolidation
At 209,000 GSF, this VA Long Beach Healthcare Project utilized the latest technology in Building Information Modeling and visualization software for all MEP coordination.
Individual program components include the construction of three new buildings: an 83,700 sq.-ft., three-story outpatient clinic a 65,900 sq.-ft., two-story education resource & conference center auditorium cafeteria and a 56,000 sq.-ft., two-story, 24-bed inpatient/outpatient blind rehabilitation center.
In addition, the project involved construction of a new utility tunnel that provides mechanical and electrical services to existing VA facilities and the new buildings. Extensive work was also done to integrate the new mechanical and electrical systems into the existing VA facilities.
Surrounding the education resource center and blind rehabilitation center are multiple themed gardens designed to enrich the lives of hospital patients. These gardens include the California native garden, horizon courtyard, scent garden, texture garden, and atrium garden.

Va Long Beach Building 126 Outpatient Clinic Renovation
Construction on the VA Long Beach Outpatient Clinic Renovation, also known as Building 126, began in November of 2016.
Phase 1 consisted of the renovation of the main lobby and entrance to the hospital as well as administration space totaling nearly 25,000 sq. ft. The space which was originally inpatient offices and exam rooms now serves as the main registration and intake area. The team gutted the entire interior of the old building which had been abandoned for years to upgrade the systems and space to meet the Department of Veterans Affairs’ needs for a new outpatient clinic.
The project was split into five phases, two of which include move-in time for the clients. Phase 3 included the renovation of the old administrative space to a new patient care area with offices and exam rooms totaling approximately 42,000 sq. ft. The client used Phase 4 to move around more of their employees and Amoroso finished Phase 5 as they built more patient care areas including an eye clinic, a sleep clinic and specialized exam rooms.
