The short answer is yes. You can work part time while on Social Security Disability. You just have to make sure your income doesnt exceed the limitations for substantial gainful activity, or SGA. The SGA amount is a set maximum monthly wage that helps the Social Security Administration determine whether or not your disability prevents you from earning a living. Essentially, if you exceed this limit, they may think you dont need disability benefits anymore.
While the SGA limit for 2022 is $1,350, SS disability beneficiaries who make a gross income of $970 a month will trigger whats known as a trial work period. Its not impossible to work part-time while receiving Social Security disability benefits, but its important to keep in mind that the rules surrounding disability claims and work activity are extremely complicated. For this reason, the vast majority of people choose not to work while getting benefits, so they can avoid overpayments that can jeopardize their benefits.

To be eligible for either program, the Social Security Administration first determines if applicants are disabled using a specific definition.
According to the SSA, disabled means applicants:
- Are totally disabled .
- Cant do work they previously could before the disability.

- And the disability has lasted for at least one year or will result in death.
Beyond this definition, the programs vary greatly.

What Counts As A Disability
There isnt one standard definition for a disability that applies across the board here.
Its all plan- or policy-specific, says Chicago-based attorney Michael Bartolic, whose firm focuses on employee benefits and deferred compensation. As a general observation, its any sort of injury or illness that renders one unable to do their job.
That could include things like childbirth, a major surgery with a long recovery period, an illness that requires frequent treatment, or an injury sustained in some sort of accident. Bartolic explains that the best thing to do is to check your plan documents, as the definition of disability should be clearly spelled out there.

SSDI WORK INCENTIVES
Trial Work Period – The trial work period allows you to test your ability to work for at least nine months. During your trial work period, you will receive your full Social Security benefits regardless of how much you are earning as long as you report your work activity and you continue to have a disabling impairment. In 2021, a trial work month is any month in which your total earnings are $940 or more, or, if you are self employed, you earn more than $940 or spend more than 80 hours in your own business. The trial work period continues until you have worked nine months within a 60-month period.
Extended Period of Eligibility – After your trial work period, you have 36 months during which you can work and still receive benefits for any month your earnings are not substantial. In 2021, earnings of $1,310 or more are considered substantial. No new application or disability decision is needed for you to receive a Social Security disability benefit during this period.
Expedited Reinstatement – After your benefits stop because your earnings are substantial, you have five years during which you may ask Social Security to start your benefits immediately if you find yourself unable to continue working because of your condition. ou will not have to file a new disability application, and you will not have to wait for your benefits to start while your medical condition is being reviewed to make sure you are still disabled.

How You Earn Work Credits
You earn one work credit for every three-month block that you work a job that pays into Social Security. You buy into Social Security through payroll taxes. For the year 2020, the SSA says that you must earn at least $1,410 per quarter to earn a single work credit, and $5,640 in a year to earn four work credits.
For example, a person who works 30 years at qualifying jobs could earn up to 120 work credits. Note that the number of credits you have beyond the requirement does not affect the amount of benefits you receive through this program.

Cpp Disability And Working
CPP disability is only for people who cant do gainful work. Specifically, Service Canada defines gainful work as the ability to earn $16,963.92 per year. This is written in the regulations.
So, you can do some work and get benefits. Service Canada allows you to earn up to $5,900 per year. You dont even have to report it to them. However, once you earn $5,900 or more, you must report it.
The more you earn over $5,900, the more likely they are to stop your benefit. But, Service Canada looks at this on a case-by-case basis. For example, we have seen people earn as much as $13,000 and still keep their benefits.

Unlike a leave of absence you might take under the Family and Medical Leave Act , short-term disability doesnt offer any direct job protection.
