Like many businesses and organizations, Social Security had turned to options like online and telephone services to conduct its operations during the pandemic. Those options are still available. Nevertheless, people in rural areas and those without access to transportation or technology have struggled for help with Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income .

To avoid waiting in line, I strongly encourage people who can, to use our online services at www.socialsecurity.gov, call us and schedule appointments in advance rather than walking in without an appointment, said Kilolo Kijakazi, Social Securitys acting commissioner, in a statement. Social Security warns that it is currently having problems with its phone systems. You may experience service issues, including poor call quality, dropped calls and long wait times.

Social Security Administration To Resume In

The Social Security Administration is pleased to announce that local Social Security offices restored in-person services, including for people without an appointment, in April. This includes the 23 offices across Washington state.

In King County there are offices in downtown Seattle, North Seattle, Bellevue, Kent, and Burien. To avoid waiting in line, we strongly encourage people who can to use our online services, call us, and schedule appointments in advance rather than walking in without an appointment. Phone appointments can save you a trip to a busy office. We thank the public for your patience as we work to increase service.

Customers who walk in without appointments may encounter delays and longer waits at our offices. Be aware that our offices tend to be the busiest first thing in the morning, early in the week, and during the early part of the month, so people may want to plan to visit at other times. Given that many of the people we serve have health vulnerabilities, and consistent with our union agreements, we are continuing to require certain safety measures including masking, physical distancing, and self-health checks for COVID-19 symptoms. We will provide masks to the public and employees if they need them.

Social Security Administration Cuts Hurt Every State

1st Amendment Audit – Social Security Administration Spokane

With the baby boom generation now squarely in its peak years for retirement and disability, the demands on the Social Security Administration are extraordinarily high. Yet Congress has cut SSAs core operating budget by 17 percent since 2010, after adjusting for inflation. These cuts hurt SSAs service to the public in every state. The agency has been forced to shutter field offices and shrink its staff, leading to longer waits for service and growing backlogs. While the overall effect is a decline in service nationwide, the effects of the cuts vary considerably by state.

  • SSAs staff shrank by 15 percent nationwide between 2010 and 2021, so there are fewer people to take appointments, answer phones, and process applications for Social Securitys vital retirement, survivors, and disability benefits. As a result, workers and beneficiaries must wait longer to be served. Four states Alaska, Iowa, Virginia, and West Virginia and Puerto Rico have each lost more than 25 percent of their staff since 2010.
  • In addition to its own staff, SSA funds state Disability Determination Service employees, who decide whether applicants disabilities are severe enough to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income . DDS staff shrank by 16 percent nationwide between 2010 and 2021. Eight states Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Montana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia each lost over 30 percent of their DDS staff.

Since 1988 More Than $500000 In Benefits Paid To Accounts

Tacoma An Olalla, Washington man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 25 months in prison for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft for his decades-long theft of his missing brothers identity and benefits, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman. Chris Harvey Sayler, 74, began fraudulently collecting his missing brothers Social Security Disability benefits since at least 1998. Over the last twenty years, those benefits total more than $388,000. At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Robert J. Bryan said, This is a sad case for all concerned including the public. Its a crime against all the citizen taxpayers in the country. Judge Bryan noted that but for Saylers age, health and military service, he would have faced a much longer sentence.

Over the course of this investigation, the defendant has made conflicting statements about when he last saw his brother who was reported missing in 1989, said Acting U.S. Attorney Gorman. Our hope was that the investigation could shed light on what happened to Jarvis Sayler. While that has not happened, we are able to hold his brother accountable for stealing benefits from government programs that are designed to help the most needy in our community.

In court today Sayler said, Im sorry that I caused all this problem. I shouldnt have done it.

The Clark County Sheriffs Office remains interested in hearing from anyone who has information on Jarvis Sayler and his disappearance.
