Celebrate Veterans Every Day

Veteran’s Day 2022

Veterans Day is a time to respect and celebrate the people in your life who have served in the military and have been discharged. Its a day for Americans to thank the members of the community who have put in the time to defend the nation and the freedoms that we enjoy. Its a time to appreciate the literal blood, sweat, and tears of the nearly 20 million Veterans who live and work in America.

Americans can remember and be proud of the role the country played in the Allied victory during World War I and know that, once, we celebrated that victory with the world. But there have been many conflicts since then, and many, many more Veterans. Now, this holiday serves to remind us to appreciate what we have while we have it and protect the wellbeing of those who protected us.

Dont wait to thank a Veteran. Be kind, listen, and help wherever you can.

Because they already have.

Ways To Show Vets Appreciation

Remember that Veterans Day is to honor the service of all Americans who have served, but particular the living veterans among us. Many of our vets stepped in harms way on our behalf.

Therefore, a cheery Happy Veterans Day! may not be fitting to a person who may have friends who died in combat. According to a veterans poll , 49% of vets feel uneasy with the expression, Thank you for your service. They werent sure how to respond, and preferred action to words.

But dont get hung up on not knowing exactly how to express your gratitude to a veteran. Everyone knows and appreciates a kind word and, even better, an act of kindness.

Here are 10 ways you can show vets that you appreciate the sacrifices they made:

  • If you personally know a veteran , reach out to them on Veterans Day with a phone call or visit! This is one opportunity to engage beyond just saying thank you. If they are comfortable discussing it, ask a vet where they served, where they were stationed, what specific jobs they did while serving, and so on.
  • If youre not close to a veteran, write a thank you card and drop it off at a VA hospital. If youre not in time for this Veterans Day, thats fine a thoughtful card is appreciated any time. Or, contact Operation Gratitude, which sends letters of thanks and care packages to veterans as well as deployed vets.
  • Do you have a drivers license? Help bring disabled vets to their doctor appointments. Contact the hospital service coordinator at your local VA Hospital.

  • Veterans Day originated in the Armistice Day holiday commemorating the November 11, 1918, armistice at 11 a.m. , which suspended active hostilities and effectively ended the First World War.President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, the first Armistice Day with the following words: To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the countrys service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations .

It Draws Attention To The Challenges Facing Many Veterans

Veterans face disproportionate rates of homelessness, deficits in educational achievement, a struggle to find employment, and often have to deal with devastating wounds. In many cases, post-traumatic stress disorder makes it hard for them to reintegrate into regular society. By understanding these challenges, we can all reach across those divides and make sure veterans have the best possible chance of having a healthy and fulfilling life after their service.

    The History Of Veterans Day

Veterans Day occurs every year on November 11. This date was not chosen at random, though, as November 11, 1918 was the day that the Allies signed an armistice with Germany to officially end World War I. To honor the American soldiers that fought during WWI, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed in 1919 that November 11 would be celebrated as Armistice Day. In 1938, Congress made Armistice Day an official federal holiday.

In the following decades, American soldiers would again go to war and fight both in World War II and the Korean War. Following the Korean War, veterans would appeal to Congress to amend the act that created Armistice Day so that it would honor veterans of all wars and not just World War I. Congress obliged and in 1954 the word Armistice was removed from the holiday and the word Veterans was put in its place where it has remained ever since.

While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day in calendars and advertisements, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website states that the attributive rather than the possessive case is the official spelling “because it is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”

    Observance In The Commonwealth

The common British, Canadian, South African, and tradition includes a one- or at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month , as that marks the time when the armistice became effective.

The Service of Remembrance in many countries generally includes the sounding of the “”, followed by the period of silence, followed by the sounding of “” or sometimes just “”. The Service of Remembrance is finished by a recitation of the “”. The “”, “”, “” and “” are often played during the service. Services also include wreaths laid to honour the fallen, blessings, and national anthems.

The central ritual at throughout the Commonwealth is a stylised night vigil. “” was the common bugle call at the close of the military day, and “The Rouse” was the first call of the morning. For military purposes, the traditional night vigil over the slain was not just to ensure they were indeed dead and not unconscious or in a coma, but also to guard them from being mutilated or despoiled by the enemy, or dragged off by scavengers. This makes the ritual more than just an act of remembrance but also a pledge to guard the honour of war dead. The act is enhanced by the use of dedicated cenotaphs and the laying of wreathsthe traditional means of signalling high honours in ancient Greece and Rome.

Why Was It Armistice Day Before Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day 2019: Wallpapers, Clipart, Images & Stickers for ...

Armistice Day was declared to honor those who had served in World War I and later evolved to observe veterans of all U.S. wars.

After Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954, the holiday was celebrated in October for several years in the 1970s, but was eventually changed back to its original date of Nov. 11.

The day continues to be known as Armistice Day throughout some European countries, including France.

    The Evolution Of Armistice Day

The ceremonies became an annual observance among many who wanted to keep the memory of the war alive, and by 1926 the U.S. Congress had adopted a resolution urging President Calvin Coolidge to issue annual Armistice Day proclamations. In 1938, November 11 was designated Armistice Day nationwide by act of Congress, which said that the day should be dedicated to the cause of world peace.

But world peace proved elusive. Though World War I had been dubbed the war to end all wars, the world plunged back into conflict. In 1941, the U.S. entered World War IIwhich would become what is still known as the worlds deadliest conflict. Over 291,000 American soldiers died in battle, and another 670,000 were wounded. The Korean War followed in 1950, leading to the deaths of nearly 34,000 American soldiers and another 103,000 wounded.

By that time, Armistice Day had begun to seem outdated, as most veterans had been born after World War I ended. In 1953, Alvin J. King, an Emporia, Kansas, cobbler who had lost a nephew during World War II, petitioned the city to rename the holiday to honor all who had served. That year, the city celebrated Veterans Day on November 11 instead.

Congress agreed, and the name change became official in 1954.

    What Is Veterans Day

Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. However, most Americans confuse this holiday with Memorial Day, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

What’s more, some Americans don’t know why we commemorate our veterans on Nov. 11. It’s imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former service members properly.

  • Today, we honor generations of patriots who have earned the title of American veteran a badge of courage that unites the finest group of former service members the world has ever known. With their selfless sacrifice, our Armed Forces have forged and defended the very idea of America a promise of freedom and equality, democracy and justice, possibility and hope. We owe them an incredible debt that can never be fully repaid.

Veterans Day is personal to the Biden family. We have felt the pride that comes with seeing your child wear the uniform of the United States and the pain of long deployments far from home. We know what it is like to pray every day for the safe return of someone you love. And we have stood in awe of our veterans who carry the lasting wounds of war. We pledge to continue the work to return our prisoners of war and those still missing in action and commit to remember the sacrifice of the families of those who have served. As both a father and Commander in Chief, I firmly believe that our one truly sacred obligation as a Nation is to properly prepare and equip the brave women and men we send into harms way and to care for them and their loved ones when they return home.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand thisseventh day of November, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-seventh.
