Similar to Home Medical Care, Homemaker Services can be paid for by several different sources of funds from within the VA. These options include:

The Cost Of Assisted Living In Tampa
Assisted living in Tampa checks in substantially below the national average – not too surprising, since the South tends to be a relatively cost-effective region. The 2015 Genworth Cost of Care Survey lists the average annual cost to be $36,000, which is much lower than the U.S. average of $43,200. On a per month basis, this annual figure breaks down to $3,000 per month. If you look at things from a daily rate, the cost hovers around $99 per day.
This price point is good news for seniors that exist in that area where skilled nursing home is not needed or maintaining a home is no longer desired. Homemaker services cost $42,900 and home health aide services cost $46,057 on an annual basis. It is certainly a more cost-effective option when compared to nursing home care in Tampa, which average annual cost is roughly $72,051 for a semi-private room and about $80,665 for a private room.
For qualified veterans and their spouses, further assisted living savings may be obtainable via the Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit, which can otherwise be known as the A& A Pension Benefit. This special benefit can provide a veteran up to $1,788 per month, a surviving spouse up to $1,149 per month, or a couple up to $2,120 per month. Furthermore, a veteran with a sick spouse that applies for the program is eligible to receive up to $1,406 per month. The process to qualify for the A& A Pension Benefit is relatively simple.

Qualifying For Veterans Nursing Home Care
Veterans of the Armed Forces have several added benefits when it comes to retirement and long-term care planning. When consulting your Florida elder law attorney about planning for nursing home care, it is important to consider all the options. In addition to treatment in VA operated medical facilities, many veterans also qualify for additional nursing home care benefits. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs manages this benefit however, individual states also operate state veterans homes. Rules vary from state to state.
Eligibility for VA nursing home care
Not all veterans are eligible for services, but those who are must first locate a community nursing home. These private facilities contract with the VA to provide services to veterans. Second, the veteran must be determined eligible. To qualify, the veteran must:
- Be enrolled in the VA Health System
- Be mentally and physically in stable condition
- Receive a medical referral documenting the type of care needed
- Receive documentation as to the length of stay needed and the anticipated discharge and
- Meet a priority guideline.
How nursing homes prioritize admissions
Even if the veteran is fully qualified to receive care, there is not always room for everyone who qualified. Therefore, the following factors may be considered to prioritize admissions:
- The availability services in the facility where the veteran has applied
- The sort of care the veteran needs and
- If the facility can actually meet the veterans care needs.

State veterans homes fill an important need for veterans with low income and veterans who desire to spend their last years with “comrades” from former active-duty. The predominant service offered is nursing home care. VA nursing homes must be licensed for their particular state and conform with skilled or intermediate nursing services offered in private sector nursing homes in that state. Deputy Executive Director Bob Asztalos Of The Florida Department Of Veterans Affairs Told A State Senate Committee That Its Wages Are Finally Competitive Thanks To A $56 Million Boost In Funding Last Year
A top state veterans official told Florida senators Wednesday that the state-run nursing homes for veterans are still recovering after the COVID pandemic shrank their staffs and reduced the number of residents.
Deputy Executive Director Bob Asztalos of the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs told a Senate committee that its wages are finally competitive, thanks to a $5.6 million boost in state funding last year.
“We are hiring people back,” he told the Military and Veterans Affairs, Space and Domestic Security Committee. “We’ve got our censuses back up to around 80% census. So we went from the 60s to 80s. We’re hoping that we get our buildings back to full by the end of this fiscal year.”
There are about 1,100 beds statewide in the department’s long-term care facilities.
As operations return to normal, Asztalos said the department wants to make its nursing homes more than long-term care beds — to make them veteran communities providing outpatient therapy and short-term rehab.
“We would love to do adult day care in our buildings,” he said. “We have space for that. And this would allow us to keep veterans in their home. So there’s much more we could do. We’re looking at our new homes to be able to turn them into communities. But also we’re looking at our existing homes.”
This would diversify revenue streams, he said.
