Veterans with multiple disabilities use the combined rating system.
To use the combined rating system, arrange the disabilities in order by severity and locate the intersect of the two numbers on the table below.
The VA rounds the final figure to the nearest to 10 percent.
If the Veteran has more than two disabilities, find the combined value for the first two, without rounding, and repeat with the third disability. Once you have a final number, round to the nearest 10%.
For example, if disability 1’s rating is 40% and disability 2’s is 20%, the combined rating is 52%. That figure gets rounded to the nearest 10%, making the disability rating 50%.
For a three-disability example, if disability 1’s rating is 60%, disability 2’s rating is 30%, and disability 3’s rating is 20%, we first find the rating of 1 and 2. The rating of 1 and 2 comes out to be 72. We then take the first combined rating and find the intersect with disability 3. The final number comes out at an even 80% rating.

Inform the VA of a change as soon as possible.
The VA will sometimes backdate payments to make up for any shortfalls, like if you had to wait for your child to receive a social security number to report a new dependent.
In the case of the loss of an eligible dependent, your payment may decrease. The VA can recoup overpayments if you failed to notify the VA of a change in family status in a timely manner.

About Va Disability Ratings And Va Disability Compensation
If you were injured or became seriously ill while serving in the military, you may be eligible for certain veterans benefits, including VA disability compensation. The VA pays this benefit to certain military veterans based who became ill or injured while serving on active duty.

Veterans who can’t do a significant amount of work may be eligible for a 100% disability rating based on unemployability, even though they could not be rated 100% disabled under the Schedule for Rating Disabilities. The VA calls this Total Disability for Individual Unemployability . TDIU takes into account the impact of disabilities on a veteran’s ability to work. This is more subjective than the standard ratings, which are based on the impact of a disability on the average person’s ability to work.
To be awarded Total Disability for Individual Unemployability , a veteran must show that he or she is unable to engage in a “substantially gainful occupation.” This generally means an occupation with an annual income that is above the poverty rate. This inability to work must be linked to a service-connected disability. Also, the service-connected disability must be rated at 60% or higher, or, if the veteran has more than one disability, at least one of the disabilities must be rated at 40% and the combined rating must be 70% or more.
What Conditions Are Covered By These Benefits
You may be able to get VA disability benefits for conditions such as:
- Chronic back pain resulting in a current diagnosed back disability
- Breathing problems resulting from a current lung condition or lung disease
- Severe hearing loss
- Loss of range of motion
- Cancers caused by contact with toxic chemicals or other dangers

Total Disability Based On Individual Unemployability : Compensated At 100% Rate
By demonstrating TDIU, you can receive monthly disability compensation at the 100 percent rate, even if your combined disability rating is less than 100 percent. TDIU is awarded when veterans are unable to obtain and maintain substantially gainful employment due to their service-connected conditions. Importantly, TDIU can be due to any service-connected conditions that contribute to their unemployability .
Furthermore, such service-connected conditions can be taken in combination when considering TDIU. That is, veterans do not have to show that their depression alone prevents them from working. Instead, veterans can argue that their depression combined with their knee and back conditions make them unable to work. In order to qualify for TDIU on a schedular basis, veterans must demonstrate the following:
- They have one service-connected condition rated at 60 percent or higher or
- They have multiple service-connected conditions, one of which is rated at least 40 percent disabling, with a combined disability rating of at least 70 percent

Va Proposes Updates To Disability Rating Schedule
The Department of Veterans Affairs has proposed changes to the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities that pertain to the respiratory and auditory systems. The changes will incorporate medical advancements for treating certain disabilities and modern medical knowledge to more accurately compensate veterans for their service-connected disabilities, according to the VA.
Veterans who currently receive compensation for a service-connected condition in these body systems will not have their disability rating impacted when the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities is updated, said Thomas Murphy, the acting undersecretary for benefits.
Some of the proposed changes include modernizing the evaluation criteria for sleep apnea by evaluating it based on the symptoms responsiveness to treatment. If symptoms are fully treated with a CPAP machine or other treatment, a veteran would be rated at 0% and not receive compensation the VA will award progressively higher percentage evaluations based on how symptomatic the condition remains after treatment.
In public comments, DAV stated that the proposed change is a failure to address the functional impairment caused by sleep apnea and asserted that the current 50% rating is appropriate.
For tinnitus , proposed changes would recognize that symptom as part of a veterans broader ailment. The veteran would receive service-connected compensation for tinnitus through the disease to which it is attributed, rather than as a stand-alone disability.

Va Disability Compensation Rates For Conditions
VA disability compensation is a tax-free monetary benefit paid to disabled veterans with service-connected disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during their active duty military service.
2022 VA disability pay rates are determined according to a veterans combined VA disability rating, which is rated on a scale from 10% to 100%, with breaks at 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, and 90%.
While a 0% VA disability rating is still considered service connected with some VA benefits, the 0 percent VA rating is not eligible for monthly tax-free compensation benefits .

Under the traditional rating scale for compensation, 100 percent is the highest rating you will receive for either an individual service-connected condition or combined service-connected conditions. However, there are certain circumstances in which veterans can receive additional forms of compensation due to particularly severe conditions. For example, special monthly compensation is awarded to veterans who have severe disabilities that bring them above and beyond the schedular rating criteria.

Achieving Service Connection For Va Disability Benefits
In order to be awarded service connection for a VA disability benefits claim, the veteran will need to submit three things to the VA:
- A current medical diagnosis
- An in-service event, injury, or illness which caused or worsened the veterans condition and
- A medical nexus that links the veterans condition to the in-service event, injury, or illness.
Veterans who wish to file a claim for VA benefits may use VA Form 21-526EZ. The form has sections for the veteran to provide information regarding their identity, condition, and military service.

If you get disability benefits for a preservice disability, we base your monthly compensation amount on the level of aggravation. Level of aggravation means how much worse your preservice disability got because of your military service.
