YOU NEVER HAVE TO BE ALONE EVER AGAIN

A hundred years ago, they called PTSD shell shock. These days, post-traumatic stress disorder does not only affect war veterans and people who have been in war zones. PTSD can occur in people who have experienced a range of extremely stressful and traumatic events and situations. Managing the various symptoms of PTSD can involve an array of techniques and therapies. One of these involves sharing your life with a wonderful PTSD Service Dog!

A PTSD SERVICE DOG LIFE-CHANGER

Training service dogs for individuals living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder requires very specialized knowledge and skills in both the trainer and the dog. These service dogs must possess a perceptive nature, a courteous, compliant temperament and an intuitive spirit in order to perform their duties independently when the individual is facing a crisis.

Who Can Get Psychiatric Service Dogs

Psychiatric service dog training focuses on helping people with certain mental illnesses, such as:

  • Social phobiasâ

The ADA states that anyone with a diagnosed disability can get a service dog. The disability may be physical or mental, and it must impact your life to the point where major activities are limited. Mental illnesses â like anxiety, depression, or PTSD â can be a disability if they put limitations on your life. Some examples might be if you canât work or leave your home due to the illness.

To qualify for a PSD, your mental illness has to prevent you from living your life independently. If you have a mental illness, but it doesnât limit your daily life, you wouldnât be able to get a psychiatric service dog. You also must be able to show that you can give the dog commands, care for it, and give it a stable and loving home.â

PSDs for Anxiety. Anxiety is the most common mental illness around the world, and a psychiatric service dog can help you manage it.

A psychiatric service dog for anxiety can:

  • Pick up on signs and symptoms of anxiety attacks before they start
  • Distract you during an anxiety attack so that you can calm down
  • Apply physical pressure with its body to help calm you down
  • Warn others to give you space
  • Get your medication during an anxiety attack
  • Give you a sense of safety with their presence
  • Alert others for help if they sense that youâre in danger

Can Va Cover For Service Dogs

There are cases when VA benefits can cover for a service dog. However, to find out, a veteran will have to speak to their health care professional.

When doing so, they will need to talk about both their mental and physical limitations to figure out whether a service dog is right for them.

Each request is analyzed to make sure that the treatment is necessary, and that a goal can be met by the ongoing use of a service dog.

If it all goes ahead, the service dog will be prescribed via the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The label on the bottle says 5mg per 1 lb of body weight. In FAQ it says 8-12mg per 1lb of body weight. I researched and 5-10mg/pound seems right. Maybe the 5 mg/lb on the bottle label is for using on daily basis.

It actually says that its for temporary relief of pain and inflammation associated with arthritis and joint problems. I needed aspirin for my dog being in pain after she cut her paw. It helped her pain.

The picture of the tablet on the bottle shows you can split it but the tablets dont have any mark on them for splitting. The tablets are supposed to be chewable but they are very hard. Not a liver treat either.

I would prefer buffered ones and not worry about taking it with food to prevent upset stomach. Sometimes you want to give her a pain relief pill right away, not to complicate the situation with food.

What Are Service Dogs

You may hear service dog and think that it is one of the animals that assist cops or military personnel. Dogs can be trained to do this, but these types of dogs arent the service dogs we are referring to. Service dogs encompass a wide array of dogs to help support those with mental illness and/or physical disabilities.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act , Service Animals are defined as follows:

Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the persons disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

This definition does not affect or limit the broader definition of assistance animal under the Fair Housing Act or the broader definition of service animal under the Air Carrier Access Act.

Some State and local laws also define service animal more broadly than the ADA does.

A service dog for anxiety is not the same as an emotional support animal.

According to the ADA, emotional support, therapy, comfort, and companion animals do notqualify as service animals. While these animals do provide emotional support, they are not trained to perform specific tasks for their handler.

Emotional support animals are not protected under the ADA. That means you may not be allowed to travel with them and you can’t take them into some public places. You will need to check the laws about emotional support animals in the state where you live.
