The SSA defines post-traumatic stress disorder as recurrent and intrusive recollections of a traumatic experience, which are a source of marked distress.
You may qualify for Social Security Disability benefits for PTSD if you satisfy several criteria specified in the SSAs medical Listing of Impairments.
PTSD is categorized as a Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorder, under SSA Listing 12.15. The medical requirements are spelled out in three parts, A, B, and C. Your symptoms must satisfy the requirements of paragraphs A and B OR A and C.
Part A is about medical evidence and documentation. Part A specifies five characteristics to diagnose a stress or trauma-related disorder, and all must be present.

How To Qualify For A Disability Due To Ptsd
To determine if you are medically eligible for disability benefits, the Social Security Administration has a set of procedures in place. These procedures are published in a handbook known as the Blue Book, and it includes a list of various disabling conditions known as listings. PTSD can be considered a disability by the SSA if the criteria for Listings 12.15 Trauma- and stressor-related disorders are met by the applicant. Within the sections of the Blue Book listing, applicants need to match sections A and B, or sections A and C in the listing for Trauma- and stressor-related disorders.
Travelling To Or From Other Countries
Moving abroad may affect the size of your disability benefit from NAV. If you move to another EEA member state, you will usually continue to receive your disability benefit from the National Insurance Scheme. If you are receiving disability benefit with rights as a young disabled person, it is possible that you may not receive some of your disability when you move to another EEA member state. Ptsd Can Make A Person Feel Hopeless Guilty And Severely Anxious

For example, avoiding triggers can make a person feel like they cannot go through life freely instead, they are in fear sometimes irrational fear most of the time. They might have intense apprehension about their day-to-day actions.

For those who manage to work, the disorder can cause individuals to struggle to meet work-related deadlines and others demands and can lead to higher absenteeism, especially for visits to the doctor. Others may experience physical conditions, like muscle tension, headaches, or increased blood pressure.
Because PTSD, depression, and anxiety can be destructive and be a roadblock to a person’s success, it can also lead to another issue – substance use and dependency. Compared to those without PTSD, an investigation from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area showed that men with the disorder were five times more likely to have abused drugs, whereas women were 1.4 times more probable to engage in it.
Additionally, another sample from the National Comorbidity Study demonstrated that approximately 52 percent of men and 28 percent of women met the criteria for lifetime alcohol abuse and dependency.
If Your Child Has Lived Outside Of The Uk
You must be in England, Scotland or Wales when you make the claim.
The UK, Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man needs to be your childs main home. This is known as being habitually resident.

Your Earnings And Other Benefits
DLA isnt means tested, so it doesnt matter how much you earn or how much money you might have in savings.
Any other benefits you might be getting wont be affected. In fact, getting DLA could mean that:
- you can get other benefits, or
- you can get a higher rate of the benefits that you currently get
Who Is Entitled To Disability Benefit
To be eligible for disability benefit, you must generally satisfy the following criteria:
- You must be between 18 and 67 years old.
- You must have been a member of the National Insurance Scheme in the last 5 years before you became disabled.
- Illness and / or injury must be the main reason why your earning capacity has been reduced.
- Appropriate vocational rehabilitation measures must have been completed.
- Your earning capacity must be permanently reduced by at least 50%, due to illness and / or injury.
If you are receiving work assessment allowance at the time of your application, it is sufficient that your earning capacity has been permanently reduced by at least 40 per cent. If your disability is due to an approved occupational illness or injury, it is sufficient that your earning capacity has been permanently reduced by at least 30 per cent.

% Ptsd Disability Rating
A 10 percent PTSD rating is the lowest compensable rating offered by VAs rating criteria for mental disorders. As such, the rating criteria reflects very minimal and often well-controlled symptomology. When assigning a 10 percent PTSD rating, VA will look for the following:
- Occupational and social impairment due to mild or transient symptoms which decrease work efficiency and ability to perform occupational tasks only during periods of significant stress, or symptoms controlled by continuous medication.
In this case, a veteran may experience certain PTSD symptoms that are exacerbated during periods of stress, but ultimately do not impair their ability to work in most occupations. Furthermore, the increase in severity of PTSD symptoms during periods of stress implies that the symptoms tend to be episodic otherwise.
This means that symptoms are not always present and therefore do not significantly interfere with occupational and social functioning. Moreover, when symptoms are present, it is likely that you can control them with treatment or medication.
If You Get Disability Living Allowance
DLA will continue to be paid for children up to the age of 16, both for existing or new claimants.
If you are a parent or guardian of a child under 16 years who is receiving DLA, you will receive a letter before your child turns 16. It will explain how to apply for PIP, when to claim and what will happen to DLA.
Measures are in place to support you if you received DLA and are financially worse off after you have been assessed for PIP.

Winning Long Term Disability Benefits For Ptsd From The Insurance Company
Convincing the insurance company that PTSD is a disability can be an uphill battle. What does it take to show an insurance carrier that you are unable to work because of your disorder and its complications?
Your first action is to read the policy and understand any limitations and exclusions. Here are a few common restrictive provisions written into most long term disability policies:
- Insurance policies often take a hard line and limit coverage of mental and nervous conditions. This umbrella term generally limits PTSD and other mental health disorders to 24-months coverage. If you are awarded short-term disability benefits, just as the 24-months of benefits expire the insurer will say you do not qualify for long-term disability, and disability payments will end.
- LTD policies often have an act of war exclusion upon which insurers may try to base denials of disability benefits for PTSD.
- Most insurance policies will require that you also apply for Social Security disability benefits. The reason is, any disability payments the insurance company pays you will be offset by the amount of your Social Security disability payments. And just because Social Security approves your disability claim for PTSD, this has no bearing on whether your insurance company will approve your claim for long-term disability benefits for PTSD.

Can You Get Disability For Ptsd
You are able to have a successful disability claim for PTSD, but in order for you to get disability for PTSD it needs to be properly medically documented. In order for you to get disability for PTSD, you need to have as much medical documentation as possible.
In your application, the SSA will ask for your medical records, including hospital records and clinic notes from physicians, therapists, and counselors.
When you are applying for disability with PTSD, you should ask your doctor to fill out a Residual Functional Capacity Evaluation on your behalf.
The RFC evaluation is a form that your doctor fills out that evaluates the maximum you can do despite your disability, such as PTSD.
Your RFC evaluation is another example of medical documentation that helps show that you are unable to work full time because of your PTSD.
