Michigan Department Of Veterans Affairs Announce Partnership Making It Easier To Vote

State teams up with the Department of Veterans Affairs to make it easier to vote

This partnership will allow for quick and easy access to vital information, said Angela Benander, the deputy chief of communications for SOS.

FOX 2 – On National Voter Registration Day the state announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“Were going to be providing voter registration information and assistance to veterans and their dependents at some VA facilities across the state,” said Angela Benander.

It allows for quick access to vital information, said Benander, the deputy chief of communications for SOS.

“Its really part of the departments efforts to meet people where they are, and make sure that were taking every opportunity to bring state government services to the people. And the VA is a place where veterans spend a lot of time,” she said. “Its just a part of the importance of making sure that Michiganders who have served our country, have every opportunity to help determine its future.”

Through the partnership, VA facilities across Michigan will implement and expand programs to help military vets and eligible dependents with voter registration about how to participate in elections.

“Because everyone lives busy lives its not always obvious where, when, or how we should go about trying to find the right information,” she added.

Veteran Success: From Homeless To Earning A Living Wage

Robert Smith first visited Michigan Works! after his car broke down and he wasn’t able to continue his work as a ride-hail driver. He had been homeless for the previous 10 months, living in a hotel, and saw this as an opportunity to go back to a job he loved – being a chef.

After identifying himself as a veteran, Robert was referred to Veteran Career Advisor Mathew Mendez. Together, they created an employment plan addressing Robert’s current housing, transportation and job development needs.

Mathew first started by connecting Robert with community resources to address his housing and transportation limitations. Then they worked on his resume and began his job search. Mathew suggested he reach out to his former employers, which paid off when a manager from the Detroit Institute of Arts offered him a job as a chef.
