Helping Your Employees Who Are Returning Veterans

Supporting Military Members & Spouses Through Specialized Grants

Workforce Solutions of Central Texas programming provides training services for veterans, military transitioning service members, and spouses of service members through a specialized grant designed to help those in our military community. The funding is provided through the National Dislocated Worker Grant and is intended to provide workforce training services at Fort Hood and in the seven counties surrounding the installation to service members and their spouses dislocated by delays caused by the pandemic.If you check any of the items below, you could qualify for NDW support:

  • Laid off from employment through no fault of your own
  • Spouse of active-duty military
  • Military transitioning out of service
  • Spouse who has substantial loss of income due to other spouses decrease in income
  • Individuals eligible for and receiving unemployment insurance

Do you think you deserve credit for your military training? We do! Check out College Credit for Heroes is an online database that matches military training to college courses. As a guest user you can enter your military occupation and service schools to get an immediate estimate of potential college credits. Or, you can complete the free registration and request an official evaluation of your military educational experience. And, if you decide to pursue a degree or certificate, you can even request an official college transcript. College Credit For Heroes is a partnership between the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The Texas Veterans Commission offers employment services to Texas veterans and helps employers find qualified veteran job applicants. Our vision is that every veteran and eligible veteran spouse in the State of Texas have access to long term and meaningful work. To bring that vision into reality, TVC-Employment Services provides sound job coaching and pathways to overcome employment barriers. In conjunction with assisting our Veterans, our Veterans Employment Representatives work diligently to communicate and assist employers with understanding the unique benefits and simple procedures involved with hiring Texas Veterans.

Over 170 Texas Veterans Commission VERs located in workforce center in more than 75 cities throughout Texas provide a full range of employment services and offer one-on-one assistance with job applications, resume preparation, job matching and searches, as well as other intensive services. Spectrums commitment to hiring veterans, National Guard and Army Reserve members runs deep. Now, thanks to the Texas Workforce Commission, our customers will know this the moment they step in our door.

Spectrum, named one of Forbes Best Employers for Veterans, was recently honored with the We Hire Vets award from the Texas Workforce Commission. The designation recognizes Texas companies with a workforce made up of at least 10 percent veterans.

As of May 2022, more than 1,300 of our 13,000-plus Texas employees had served in the nations military.

A special ceremony was held last month in San Antonio to honor our efforts to hire veterans and provide them with special career advancement programs. Aaron Demerson of the Texas Workforce Commission attended to present the award to Rich F., Area Vice President, South Texas.

The award comes with its own badge of honor: a special Texas Workforce Commission decal we can proudly display outside our stores and elsewhere.

Adam R., a Safety Specialist in our San Antonio offices, also attended the special ceremony. Hes been working at our company for 10 years and previously served six years in the Army, completing two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Veteran’s Preference In Employment

An individual who qualifies for a veteran’s employment preference is entitled to a preference in employment over other applicants for the same position who DO NOT have a greater qualification.

Veteran’s preference means if two applicants are finalists for a position, and equal in all respects, the veteran would be offered the job. However, the Veterans Employment Preference statute does not guarantee the veteran a job. In order to be considered for an interview, all applicants must meet all required qualifications and the initial selection criteria, as specified in the job posting.

  • Application pre-screened by system. If the supplemental questions are not answered to satisfy the minimum qualifications in the posting the application will not move forward.
  • Application is screened by Hiring Manager and added to his or her matrix to determine the top best qualified applicants. This is the part of the process that usually takes the longest.
  • Interviewees are selected from by the hiring manager based on his or her matrix. At this point, the hiring manager must have at least 20% of those selected be a veteran if there is not a veteran in the top category in the matrix, then the hiring manager will replace the lowest qualified within the interview pool with the highest qualified veteran.
