Military License Plate Updates At Scdmv
BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – There are several upcoming changes regarding military plates and the application process at the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles . These scheduled changes include a mail-in requirement for all military plate applications, as well as an updated military plate program with new plates, registration fees, qualifications, and benefits.
The agency understands the importance of issuing military plates only to qualified active and prior service members. These changes will allow the SCDMV to thoroughly review customer documents to ensure individuals applying for a military plate meet the proper qualifications.
On April 18, 2022, the SCDMV will centralize the application process for obtaining a military license plate. Applications for military plates will only be processed by mail at SCDMV Headquarters in Blythewood.
Customers who visit branch offices on and after April 18, 2022, to obtain a military plate will receive an Application for Military License Plate and further instructions to complete the application by mail. Customers must mail the completed application and a copy of his or her DD-214, any other required paperwork specific to the type of plate for which theyre applying, and applicable fees to SCDMV Headquarters. Once the paperwork and payment are received, the SCDMV will review the application and process it if all required documentation and payment are present. The appropriate plate will be sent to the customer by mail.

Disability plates
Disability plates are issued to qualified Massachusetts residents who are primary owners of a registered passenger vehicle or a motorcycle. A holder of a passenger vehicle disability plate is entitled to a temporary disabled placard. A person must demonstrate “good cause” or need for the placard in writing to the medical affairs. “Good cause” means a valid reason why the plate cannot be used and duration of the need. Placards may be issued for up to 24 months.

Disability placards are issued to qualified applicants on a temporary or permanent basis. A person may be issued only one valid placard at a time.
Disability Veteran plates
Disability Veteran plates are issued only to qualified Massachusetts resident veterans who meet the same qualifications as those applying for a disability plate. The DV plate letter details your service connected disabilities. You must have a combined rating of at least 60% service connected disabilities for qualifying conditions. These are the same disabilities that would qualify you for disabled parking. These plates are issued only to qualifying persons who are the primary owner of a registered passenger vehicle.
Order Disabled American Veteran Plates Online
Once the application has been processed, the applicant will receive notification from the Department of Motor Vehicles advising them of the date their plate will be available at their County Treasurer’s office to be registered to their vehicle.
All appropriate registration fees and taxes apply and must be paid to the County Treasurer in the county where the vehicle is registered.
Disabled American Veteran License Plates do not allow the registered owner to park in spaces designated for handicapped parking. To park in a space designated for handicapped parking Handicapped License Plates or a Handicapped Parking Permit is required.
There is no limit to the number of motor vehicles or trailers owned or leased by the applicant that may be licensed with a Disabled American Veteran license plate. Separate application processes are required for each Disabled American Veteran license plate requested.

Disabled Veteran License Plates With The Wheelchair Accessibility Symbol
The Disabled Veteran license plates do not allow parking in disabled parking spots unless they display the wheelchair accessibility symbol. If you are requesting the wheelchair accessibility symbol on the license plate, you must also submit an original, signed Physicianâs Statement for Disabled License Plates/Placard from an advanced practice registered nurse, licensed physician, chiropractor, podiatrist, physical therapist, or optometrist, stating that the disability is permanent. The physicianâs statement is valid for 90 days after completion by the physician.
