Veterans age 72 or older had more income than younger veterans because those older veterans probably earned more during their working years. Those characteristics could affect their income in retirement.

In general , veterans received more income from Social Security and retirement plans than nonveterans, and nonveterans had higher earnings and more income from investments. The differences probably arose from the types of jobs veterans and nonveterans held.

The ACS data understates retirement-plan income because many people fail to report it. CBOs sample includes retirement-plan income both for those who reported such income and those to whom CBO imputed income. The IRSs taxable and aggregate income figures do not include distributions to people who did not file returns. The IRSs aggregate income figure includes distributions such as direct rollovers and conversions, which move money from one tax-preferred retirement plan to another.

ACS = American Community Survey IRS = Internal Revenue Service.

a. The IRS publishes taxable income and aggregate income from retirement plans annually in its Statistics of Income2017 Individual Income Tax Return. Because the IRS data for 2018 had not been published when CBO began its analysis, the agency projected taxable and aggregate income from retirement plans for that year by using IRS data from 2007 to 2017. To make the IRS data more comparable to data reported in the ACS, CBO averaged its projection with IRS data from 2017.

A Troubled Return Home

Ryan was 20 and recently married when he joined the Army in 1974. His father had served during the Korean War, his grandfather fought in World War II and Ryan felt it was his turn.

So the Iowa high school dropout with plans of opening a furniture-repair shop became an expert marksman with an M-16.

The transition was rough.

He rarely spoke about what happened after he enlisted, but according to his ex-wife Linda Janes, It did a job on him.

He went to Fort Bragg, N.C., where his training included jumping out of planes and parachuting into mock Vietnamese villages built on the Army base. He was never sent to Southeast Asia, nor were most of those who served during Vietnam.

But Ryan was deeply disturbed by his training in survival behind enemy lines, according to relatives. At the time, there were widely publicized accounts of the torture endured by American prisoners of war, including John McCain, a naval officer who became a U.S. senator from Arizona. Two friends of Ryans were killed.

According to Ryans military records, he was honorably discharged, but only after being granted unexplained excess leave.

He had a nervous breakdown, said Janes, Ryans second wife, who married him two years after he left the Army.

A remarkable 38 percent of service members sent to Vietnam were divorced within six months of returning home, according to a study cited by VA.

Wetlaufer said Ryan had a sweet side but often turned abrasive and pushed a lot of people away.

Nationals of other nations fought in the American-led anti-communist coalition, usually as armed forces of allied nations, such as Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and South Korea, but sometimes as members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Republic of China , Spain, and the Philippines contributed assistance in non-combat roles.

Why Do We Have Vietnam Veterans Day

You may think having a Veterans Day and then a separate day for Vietnam Veterans seems a little redundant. Well, we may bring up the same point when you go to tune in to three different country music awards on television this year.

Vietnam Veterans Day was first recognized in 2012 thanks to a proclamation by then-President Barack Obama to mark the anniversary of the date that the U.S. escalated its involvement in the struggle.

Each war our country has faced has presented a unique set of circumstances and problems to overcome. With these problems, we need a unique set of service members to face them and defy any odds that may be against us.

We think most Vets can agree with us when we say that the over 2.7 million Vietnam Vets were a different breed, in a league of their own, or any other metaphor you want to throw at them. Thats why we need a special day to honor these special service members.

Vietnam Vets Day is a time for us to look at the challenges these service members overcame, the work they put in, and the sacrifices they made in an attempt to end a growing communist regime.

Agent Orange Disability Compensation

Presumptive service connectionâVeterans may be eligible for disability compensation if they have a disability related to Agent Orange exposure during service and were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. VA has recognized certain cancers and other health problems as associated with exposure to herbicides during service.

Veterans with qualifying Vietnam service, and service in the Korean demilitarized zone, are presumed to have been exposed to Agent Orange. Other Veterans may be eligible if theycan document that they were exposed.

IOM reportsâOn Aug. 31, 2010, VA the final version of a regulation to establish presumptions of service connection between exposure to herbicides in Vietnam and Parkinson’s disease, ischemic heart disease, and B-cell leukemias. The decision was based on an analysis of findings from the Institute of Medicine’s 2008 report, “Veterans and Agent Orange.” Since 1994, IOM has published scientific reviews on the long-term health effects of herbicides on Vietnam Veterans every two years.

IOM’s most recent report, published in 2016, is the 10th and final in the series. Researchers found evidence that bladder cancer and hypothyroidism are more strongly linked to Agent Orange exposure than previously thought. But a review of the existing research did not support a previously held belief that spina bifida occurs in the offspring of exposed Veterans at higher rates.

Draftees And New Enlisted Personnel During The Vietnam War

Number of Personnel

Although the Department of Defense drafted civilians during the Vietnam War, draftees accounted for fewer than one-quarter of those who served.

The Vietnam War ran from August 1964 to January 1973. The Department of Defense estimates the number of new enlisted personnel it will need each year to maintain specific force levels. The values shown here apply to new enlisted personnel without prior military service.

Less than 25 percent of the personnel who served during the Vietnam War were drafted the others were volunteers. Service members generally reflected Americas young male population. In 1965 and thereafter, a majority of the armed forces were White males with high school diplomas, age 35 or younger. Men who had joined the military before the war began and served during the Vietnam conflict were likely to be more educated than the average service member and to complete a military career.

Ethnicity And Geographic Distribution

Vietnam veterans were more likely than nonveterans to be White and less likely to be Hispanic. Roughly equal percentages of veterans and nonveterans were Black. However, a slightly larger share of Black men than White men joined the enlisted ranks in the early 1970s.14 Like veterans of other eras, Vietnam veterans have tended to live and retire in the South, where large active-duty populations are located. Only a small share of all men, both Vietnam veterans and nonveterans, lived in rural communities.

Characteristics Of Vietnam Veterans In 2018

Various characteristicsincluding age, education, and healthinfluence the type and amount of income adults have during their working years and in retirement. Vietnam veterans differed from nonveterans in several ways.

CBO examined male veterans ages 63 to 78 who served during the Vietnam War, about 85 percent of the more than 6 million veterans of that era who were still alive in 2018. Veterans born before 1940 probably spent a substantial portion of their careers serving in the peacetime era before that war, and those born after 1955 would have been part of the all-volunteer force. Members of the National Guard and reserves were not considered Vietnam veterans unless they served on active duty during the war. Veterans who did not serve during the Vietnam War were excluded from the samples that CBO analyzed. Women were excluded because they composed just 4 percent of Vietnam veterans in 2018. Because the ACS does not ask whether the veterans were drafted or where they served, CBO did not incorporate those factors in its analysis.

The average Vietnam veteran was more likely than the average nonveteran to have a high school degree, to be White, to be a U.S. citizen, and to report a serious impairment in his ability to function . Such functional disabilities did not necessarily qualify veterans to receive disability compensation from VA.
