Knowledge is power. When you know you are not crazy or losing your mind but that the things you are experiencing are common responses to what you have been through, then it is easier to look for the things others have found useful in recovering from their chronic stress.

Accept what you feel. Try to learn to feel what you are feeling rather than run from the uncomfortable feelings. The feelings will come and go. Learn that you dont have to run from feelings, but you do need to move away from real danger.

While you shouldnt push a person with PTSD to talk, if they do choose to share, try to listen without expectations or judgments. Make it clear that youre interested and that you care, but dont worry about giving advice. Its the act of listening attentively that is helpful to your loved one, not what you say.

A person with PTSD may need to talk about the traumatic event over and over again. This is part of the healing process, so avoid the temptation to tell your loved one to stop rehashing the past and move on. Instead, offer to talk as many times as they need.

Some of the things your loved one tells you might be very hard to listen to. Its okay to dislike what you hear, but its important to respect their feelings and reactions. If you come across as disapproving, horrified, or judgmental, they are unlikely to open up to you again.

I think this question is best answered in the form of a metaphor. On a much smaller scale, imagine having gotten in a recent car accident, perhaps a fender bender where someone rear-ended you. Naturally, after you got into this accident, Id imagine youstart playing the tape of the accident in your head for a while. Maybe you start asking yourself questions like:

  • Did I not look in the mirror enough?
  • Why were they going so fast?
  • Did I brake too hard?

This is the re-experiencing piece of the equation. I would also guess that by asking yourself all those questions I just listed and having to deal with insurance and everything that comes after, you might start beating yourself up or maybe even beating the other person up. Depending on the severity of the accident, you may even have developed some strong beliefs about other types of drivers and more general beliefs like All LA drivers suck! You may start losing your trust in other drivers. All of this right here is the negative changes in mood and thoughts.

Its difficult to watch someone you love resist PTSD recovery, especially when you know that recovery would be possible if he or she chose to do the work. Unfortunately, many of these barriers involve inward, self-reinforcing beliefs. That means that even if you remind your friend that she deserves to heal, and list all the very real reasons why thats true, she will likely still find her own reasons why its not.

Having money can make it easier to shield yourself from some of the hardships of living with dysregulation. With money youll always have a place to live and youll always be able to access professional help, but these in themselves dont correlate all that well with healing.

Cope With Feelings Of Guilt And Shame

Even if you intellectually understand that youre not to blame for the rape or sexual attack, you may still struggle with a sense of guilt or shame. But as you acknowledge the truth of what happened, it will be easier to fully accept that you are not responsible. You did not bring the assault on yourself and you have nothing to be ashamed about.

Feelings of guilt and shame often stem from misconceptions such as:

You didnt stop the assault from happening. After the fact, its easy to second guess what you did or didnt do. But when youre in the midst of an assault, your brain and body are in shock. You cant think clearly. Many people say they feel frozen. Dont judge yourself for this natural reaction to trauma. You did the best you could under extreme circumstances. If you could have stopped the assault, you would have.

You trusted someone you shouldnt have. One of the most difficult things to deal with following an assault by someone you know is the violation of trust. Its natural to start questioning yourself and wondering if you missed warning signs. Just remember that your attacker is the only one to blame. Dont beat yourself up for assuming that your attacker was a decent human being. Your attacker is the one who should feel guilty and ashamed, not you.
