Hearts And Homes For Veterans Supports Veterans With Food Household Items
A lot of veterans across Southwest Florida are struggling during the economic downturn. On Tuesday, Hearts and Homes for Veterans distributed items to any veteran who presented a valid copy of their Veteran Affairs card. They received bags of food, hygiene products and cleaning supplies.
Behind the Hearts and Homes for Veterans building in fort Myers, volunteers could be seen sorting, packing, and giving away items to those in need.
Tom Donoghue, vice president of the organization, says, They get a couple bags of food, they get a hygiene product. You can see the stuff in the baskets are stuff we give out to sweeten the deal a little bit.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Donoghue says they had to shut down operations, but as we deal with the impacts more vets will likely be in need.
We think with this coronavirus theres probably a lot of people that are really hurt and people that were doing ok on their own before right now might be struggling a little bit, Donoghue
Like veteran Abby Pichareo, who says shes struggling and Right now Im not at work, so it really helps with the groceries and other stuff they get us. Its one less thing I have to buy.
Veteran Kasia Borecki also came to pick up food.It warms my heart to know that theres people out their that actually care.
Thats are goal today, to get the stuff out to veterans who really need it, Donoghue explained. Thats what were trying to do today is see if we can be a part of a solution.

The Collaborative Efforts To Help Homeless Veterans In Lee County
Harris, 64, moved to Florida from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, while his wife moved back to a northern state where they had grown up. Harris moved in with his cousin but didnt anticipate what was to come.
He lived with his cousin for only one month, until disagreements put Harris on the streets.
I was homeless for six weeks, but I stayed positive, Harris said. I did what I had to do.
As Harris was looking for resources to keep himself afloat, he stumbled upon Hearts and Homes for Veterans, a non-profit organization located in Fort Myers.
Hearts and Homes for Veterans was started by Don Payton, a combat Marine veteran. Payton became friends with a fellow Marine while in Vietnam, and back in the United States, that friend died homeless. Payton understood the struggles military personnel face when they return to civilian life, and he took it upon himself to reach as many homeless veterans as possible.
Hearts and Homes was formed not just to be another charity, but to end homelessness and assist low-income veterans in Southwest Florida. The services range from financial assistance for short-term rental and utility costs to basic needs.
There are 1.5 million veterans in the state of Florida, with veterans in Lee County making up 10% of the countys population.
One veteran’s experience in homelessness is one too many, Michael Raposa, CEO of St. Vincent DePaul CARES, said.

With first aid training below their belts workers will have the confidence to remain calm during a medical situation and will be able to provide help to those who need it without any confusion or fear.

Hearts & Homes for Veterans, Inc. , a 501 3 nonprofit corporation, thanks the Noahs Ark Thrift Shop for its very generous $500.00 shopping voucher for homeless and very-low income Veterans and their Families.
This shopping voucher fills a critical gap in Hearts & Homes for Veterans, Inc.s Homeless Veterans. HHV works very closely with the Lee County Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare Center Social Workers for Homeless Veterans moving into subsidized rental apartments.
HHV provides everything else that the Veterans and their families need, such as furniture, household products like lamps and tables, linens, and cleaning products.
Hearts & Homes for Veterans, Inc.s model is Veterans helping Veterans. Homeless Veterans cannot attend the counseling to enable them to become productive citizens until they are in safe, affordable housing.
Hearts & Homes for Veterans, Inc. recently purchased a 10,000 square Service Center and Warehouse to store the above items and Wells Fargo Bank donated a house to HHV for transitional living quarters for three Homeless Veterans.
HHV intends to apply for additional foreclosed houses in the future. The above Service Center will provide shower facilities and washing machines and dryers for Homeless Veterans and well as a mailbox so that they will have an address to apply for VA benefits.

Welcome To Shepherd’s Heart Veteran’s Home
Approximately 33% of Pittsburgh’s homeless are US Veterans. When Veteran’s Administration Chaplain Mike Wurschmidt left the US Air Force to begin his ministry among the poor and broken, he never knew that so many of the homeless in our nation’s cities were combat veterans from the Vietnam War. Over the next 22 years, Chaplain Mike and his wife, Tina, have been reaching out to the poor and homeless, including our veterans, in cities across our nation. Since June 1993, they have been in the trenches of Pittsburgh helping the homeless.
Shepherd’s Heart Veteran’s Home also known as the House of Hope is a transitional housing for homeless Veterans. The Veteran’s Home is a collaboration between Pittsburgh Veterans Affair’s Health Care for Homeless Veterans , Comprehensive Homeless Center and Shepherd’s Heart Fellowship, a parish of the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh. The collaboration aims to achieve a continuum of care for homeless Veterans. There are approximately 1500 homeless veterans on any given night in Allegheny County. In 2006, Shepherd’s Heart Fellowship was awarded a grant from the VA to renovate the second floor of the church and turn it into an ” Engagement Center”. The program aims to service male veterans who are homeless and may have posttraumatic stress disorder , substance abuse problems, mental illness, dual diagnosis, and those who are disabled. The aim of SHVH is to restore honor and dignity to those who have served our country.

Hearts and Homes for Veterans is a great outreach organization to our men and women who served our country. Having 2 brothers, uncles, cousins and a father- in-law who served these branches and has fought for our freedoms in which we practice daily. I am instilling the same values in our students to pay it forward as our veterans are needing to get back in society by providing wellness and grooming while Hearts and Homes are providing everyday essentials from clothing, home furnishings and hygienic needs. ?â¤ï¸ ??

What We Do
Our Philosophy: Low-income and very low-income Veterans should not pay more than 30% of their gross income on housing, and our units are priced with this in mind. There are many factors that come into play in determining the rental rate, such as the Veteran’s health care costs, employment status, and debt.
We stand ready to help, providing services to meet the needs of our Veterans. We use our time, talent, and donations to support Veterans’ causes in Lee County.
Who We Are
Hearts and Homes for Veterans, Inc. is a Florida nonprofit corporation that was created on March 25, 2013. Its purpose is to support homeless veterans, and their families, who find themselves without the necessities of everyday life.
Hearts and Homes for Veterans is committed to empowering these veterans to lift themselves out of poverty and then, in turn, reach back and help other veterans do the same.
