Special Project On The Stabilization And Emergency Services Needs For Operational Stress Injuries Working Group Report
VAC’s National Centre for OSI and its Mental Health Directorate created a working group to examine the needs of Veterans, CF and RCMP members who require crisis and stabilization services and who could not be readily served by existing VAC and /or community mental health services. The report provides a profile of those in need, potential areas of risk, and the impact of not addressing these needs in addition to recommendations related to medical stabilization, social stabilization and the promotion of VAC services.
Naturalistic Comparison Of Models Of Programmatic Interventions For Combat
This Australian study, published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, Vol.42 – 2008, compared the clinical presentations and treatment outcomes for Australian Veterans with PTSD who participated in a range of models of group-based treatment. Data was gathered on 4,339 Veterans with combat-related PTSD who participated in one of five types of group-based cognitive behavioural programmes of different intensities and settings. The findings have considerable import for the current evaluation.

Va Residential Treatment For Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Preliminary Report From A National Quality Improvement Effort
Between July of 2008 and March of 2011, NEPEC and the executive branch of the National Center for PTSD collaboratively conducted a mixed-method quality improvement effort in all VA residential treatment programs nationwide. The purpose was multifold and included to: 1). Identify elements of treatment that staff perceive as most effective to foster Veteran recovery from PTSD 2). Create a descriptive map of treatments and services being delivered across the country and 3). Establish a communication network among residential PTSD programs in order to share information on programmatic design and functioning.

Providing Innovative Quality Ptsd Care
The Battle Creek VA Mental Health Service has a long history of providing innovative quality care to Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder .
Dr. Timothy DeJong is a clinical psychologist with the PTSD team. Here, DeJong participates in a virtual meeting from his office at the Battle Creek, Michigan, VA Medical Center. PTSD vIOP offers Veterans four one-hour group sessions and up to three hours of individual treatments for PTSD each week.
In the wake of the far-reaching impacts of COVID-19, the PTSD team sought new ways for Veterans with PTSD to access treatment. One example of this is the PTSD virtual Intensive Outpatient Program .
The recent pandemic has presented great challenges to us as a health care organization, said Dr. Timothy DeJong. DeJong is a clinical psychologist and PTSD coordinator with the Battle Creek VA.
More intensive care options
On more options, DeJong continued: Our access to residential beds was significantly reduced as a result of COVID-19. We needed to provide more intensive care options to Veterans who were struggling at an outpatient level.
All sessions delivered virtually
Launched in August 2020, the PTSD vIOP offers Veterans four different hours of group sessions per week . It also offers two to three hours of individual treatment for PTSD per week.
The PTSD team is accepting referrals to PTSD vIOP. It continues its commitment to delivering high-quality care to Veterans in innovative ways.
What Services Are Offered
Each PTSD program offers education, evaluation, and treatment. Program services include:
- One-to-one mental health assessment and testing
- One-to-one psychotherapy and family therapy
- Group therapy or groups for Veterans of specific conflicts or specific traumas
The VA provides treatments shown by research to be effective in treating Veterans. To learn about these treatments, see our Treatment Basics page. Not all VA’s offer the same programs, and some specialty programs require a referral. Your doctor can help you decide which program is best for you.

Use Of Electronic Records
VHA is especially praised for its efforts in developing a low cost open source electronic medical records system VistA which can be accessed remotely by health care providers. With this system, patients and nurses are given bar-coded wristbands, and all medications are bar-coded as well. Nurses are given wands, which they use to scan themselves, the patient, and the medication bottle before dispensing drugs. This helps prevent four of the most common dispensing errors: wrong med, wrong dose, wrong time, and wrong patient. The system, which has been adopted by all veterans’ hospitals and clinics and continuously improved by users, has cut the number of dispensing errors in half at some facilities and saved thousands of lives.
Specialized Outpatient Ptsd Programs
Regular outpatient PTSD care can be provided by a specialist or in an outpatient PTSD program including:
- PTSD Clinical Teams
- Substance Use PTSD Teams
- Women’s Stress Disorder Teams
At these outpatient clinics, you can meet with a provider on a regular basis and receive group or one-to-one treatment. SUD-PTSD Specialists are available across the country to provide or arrange for treatment for both PTSD and substance use disorder. Day Hospitals offer more intensive outpatient treatment for four to eight hours per visit daily or several times per week.

Specialized Intensive Ptsd Programs
SIPPs provide PTSD treatment services in an inpatient or residential setting. Length of stay varies across programs and is based on the needs of the Veteran. SIPPs include:
- Evaluation and Brief PTSD Treatment Units
- PTSD Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs and PTSD Domiciliary Programs
- Specialized Inpatient PTSD Units
- Women’s Trauma Recovery Programs
Although the programs may have different names, the intensive PTSD programs include evaluation, case management in 24-hour therapeutic settings, and psychotherapy treatment that is individualized to meet the needs of the Veteran and to help Veterans return to healthy living in the community.

As of your monthly housing allowance payments changed back to the online rate. The online rate is half the national average.

Ptsd Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program
**NOTE: The PTSD-RRTP is currently closed due to construction.**
The Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program is a highly-structured six-week treatment setting for combat-related PTSD. We provide a variety of group-based, trauma-focused therapies to help male and female Veterans recover from PTSD in a supported environment. All Veterans attend voluntarily. No one can be forced to attend or remain on the PTSD-RRTP.
Residential Setting
The PTSD-RRTP offers 23 beds and occupies the 3rd floor of Building 8. The facility is NOT a locked unit. Nursing staff are available 24 hours.
You are assigned a double occupancy room, each room having its own bathroom. Wi-Fi is available. Our common living areas feature TVs, computers, recreational equipment, and a work-out room.
Meals and snacks will be provided on the unit. You are expected to keep your personal areas clean and do your own laundry.
Therapeutic Interventions for PTSD are Empirically-based, recovery focused, and include:
- Cognitive Processing Therapy
- Moral Injury, Grief, and Spirituality
To be accepted for admission into the PTSD-RRTP, you must:
Referral Process
Veterans should speak with their current provider for a referral to the PTSD-RRTP. The provider can then submit a consult. Referrals are accepted from any VA in the country.

Nvc Evaluation File Review
A file review completed by an external occupational therapist provided an overall assessment of progress for participants in the New Veterans Charter Rehabilitation Program. The sample population for this file review consisted of individuals who entered the Rehabilitation Program between April 1, 2006 and October 31, 2009, and who had participated in the program for at least six months. A stratified random sample of 350 participants was drawn. This descriptive sample allowed for the analysis of the sample’s characteristics and a comparison among various groups, but did not allow for the results to be generalized for the entire participant population. However, the findings from the file review remarkably mirrored the results and percentages gathered when the entire population was studied using departmental statistical information. This evaluation utilized the information from the NVC Evaluation file review as additional evidence on numbers presenting with mental health issues and pain.
Mental Health And Substance Abuse:
A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from , so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Who Is Covered For Va Care
VA services are provided to all Veterans who:
- Completed active military service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard
- Were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions
- Were National Guard members or Reservists who have completed a federal deployment to a combat zone
At times, the VA has special agreements to provide care to Active Duty Service members and family.

Veterans Health Administration Scandal Of 2014
In 2014, Congress passed the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act, commonly known as simply the Choice Act. VA Secretary Robert Wilkie assured veterans that the VA wouldn’t be privatized and that veterans would still be able to get the same quality of care they had been receiving. In May 2014, major problems with scheduling timely access to medical care became public. According to a retired doctor at the center interviewed by CNN, at least 40 veterans died waiting for care at the Phoenix, Arizona Veterans Health Administration facilities. An investigation of delays in treatment throughout the Veterans Health Administration system was conducted by the Veterans Affairs Inspector General, but it only found six deaths during the delay. On May 30, 2014, Secretary of Veterans AffairsEric Shinseki resigned from office due to the fallout from the scandal. Despite the negative exposure and the subsequent vows by Washington lawmakers to take action, the major problems still exist.
However, a VA Inspector General’s report issued on August 26, 2014, reported that six, not forty, veterans had died experiencing âclinically significant delaysâ while on waiting lists to see a VA doctor, and in each of these six cases, âwe are unable to conclusively assert that the absence of timely quality care caused the deaths of these veterans.â
