The Complex Disability Representation We Need: Rebekah Taussigs Sitting Pretty

Sitting PrettyThe View from My Ordinary, Resilient, Disabled Body by Rebekah Taussig (Excerpt)

Reviewed By Hannah Soyer

I often go into reading work by fellow disabled writers with hesitancy and high expectations, probably in part because of how few disability narratives I had access to growing up, and thus how much is riding on them. This is despite, of course, the fact that disabled individuals are humans who are allowed to show variety and make mistakes. Indeed, disability narratives have historically only shown incredibly limited perspectives of disability: disabled individuals are often either portrayed as the Super Crip who can overcome their disability, or the disabled character that acts as an object of pity. But disability is not a monolith, despite what many mainstream disability representations would have us believeour lived experiences are so much richer and more diverse.

Taussig finally tells her brother, When you grow up in a world that doesnt see you or welcome you or represent you, you believe the world isnt for you. Its for all the other people. Her essay collection, then, both illustrates the insidiousness of growing up in a world like this one, while offering a new set of authentic, beautifully wrought stories that tell other disabled individuals we are welcome.

Review: All The Ways We Said Goodbye By Beatriz Williams Lauren Willig And Karen White

Growing up as a paralyzed girl during the 90s and early 2000s, Rebekah Taussig only saw disability depicted as something monstrous , inspirational , or angelic . None of this felt right and as she got older, she longed for more stories that allowed disability to be complex and ordinary, uncomfortable and fine, painful and fulfilling.

Writing about the rhythms and textures of what it means to live in a body that doesnt fit, Rebekah reflects on everything from the complications of kindness and charity, living both independently and dependently, experiencing intimacy, and how the pervasiveness of ableism in our everyday media directly translates to everyday life.

Disability affects all of us, directly or indirectly, at one point or another. By exploring this truth in poignant and lyrical essays, Taussig illustrates the need for more stories and more voices to understand the diversity of humanity. Sitting Pretty challenges us as a society to be patient and vigilant, practical and imaginative, kind and relentless, as we set to work to write an entirely different story.

An Ordinary Unimaginable Love Story

Sam Wagner was my one chance at a love story, at being loved, at living the life of a wife. We went to church with the Wagners, and when Sam and I were 8 years old, he spent all of his allowance money to buy me a $3.95 Magic Eye book Id picked out of my schools Scholastic catalogue. His generous gift set off a tiny spark that maybe, if I wished it into the universe with all of my whole earnest heart, Sam would love me enough to marry me one day.

I still dont know what did the trick but slowly, slowly, as the years stretched out and we turned into adolescents, Sam really did start to pay attention to me. Hed sit near me on the bus during youth group trips, and wed sing along loudly to Relient K. Hed ask me and a handful of other church kids over to his house to sing praise and worship songs, then ask to braid my hair as we sat around the fire pit in his backyard.

I believed myself so rigidly stuck in my disabled role that it was very difficult for me to believe Sam saw me as anything other than his nonthreatening gal pal. I didnt truly believe he felt anything special toward me until one 2 a.m. phone call, me sitting on the kitchen floor and Sam hiding in his basement, when he said the words, Im really into you.Really? I said. I could hardly wrap my head around it.

At the wise age of 22, we decided to get married.

Review: Sitting Pretty: The View From My Ordinary Resilient Disabled Body

A candid and engaging memoir-in-essays, Sitting Pretty: The View from My Ordinary Resilient Body offers readers deep insight and broad perspective on disability, as reflected in Rebekah Taussig’s life.

Taussig, an independent woman, successful educator and prolific Instagrammer , became paralyzed at age three following treatment for childhood cancer. Because her parents didn’t treat her any differently than her five siblings–several years passed before she got her first wheelchair–Taussig initially didn’t see herself as disabled. “I continued to sleep on the top bunk on the top floor of the house. I learned how to pull my body up the side of my bunk bed, my feet mere props as I used my arms to lift myself up higher and higher until I tumbled onto the top mattress.” Like many young children, “I believed that I was royally beautiful, valuable, and fully capable of contributing to the group.” That idyllic view changed as she began to understand–often painfully–how society considered people like her. “I consumed and digested the culture around me and slowly learned, with certainty, that I was not among those who would be needed, admired, wanted, loved, dated, or married.”

Shelf Talker: A powerfully engaging memoir-in-essays that blends one woman’s experience as someone who uses a wheelchair with society’s perception of people with disabilities.
